What’s Sprint got up its sleeve?

By: Kris Hill January 19th, 2011

A rumor and point of discussion about Sprint adding LTE that has been floating around for some time seems to be confirmed by internal documents viewed by an anonymous Sprint employee.
Could this be what the big announcement is about?
A Sprint employee told the mod team that he saw some interesting information in an internal report by network folks talking up 2011 projects. He said, “check out the last bit of the quote.”

“… we have become the target state for all Network Vision Core Switching platforms, including the new LTE nodes.”

For some previous discussion, check out this article posted in May of last year. (Edit: Fixed the link.)

Now, I was told at CES by someone who works with Sprint and has signed an NDA that the carrier will be releasing Windows Phone 7 devices in February.
So, maybe we’ll see Sprint announce an industry first WP7 phone (or iPhone 4 or 3D Android phone or all of the above) that will be WiMax/LTE capable.
We will definitely find out one way or another on Feb. 7 makes its big announcement.
So, what do you guys think?

Very interesting. Would make sense since Clear was testing LTE in Phoenix recently http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/07/clear-bullish-on-lte-trial-results-says-wimax-is-best-for-the/

i hope it’s a ip4g or a 3d amdroid phone from htc… anything else is water under a bridge… yes, the chances of me smiling at the end of the day on 2/7 highly unlikely :[

This sounds quite plausible. It would certainly play into the “impossible is possible” theme.

Still, without a tangible phone to demonstrate (especially an iPhone), this won’t exactly be a groundbreaking announcement for most typical customers.

No matter what, Sprint needs a FANTASTIC presentation to stave off the bad blood between Sprint customers and Sprint executive movers and (money) shakers.

The revamping of the Sprint Premier program and the sudden (less than two weeks from now) addition of a $10 per phone per month recurring fee for EVERY “smartphone” activated on Sprint (including some that aren’t new and aren’t so smart) has left many of us somewhat…bewildered…with a feeling that we were “misled.”

Hopefully, Sprint will also make some sort of announcement of plans that are more attractive than the current “everything” data plans that are anything but everything.

New attractive plans…new must-have phones (dumb and smart — including a possible iPhone)…and a WiMax/LTE hybrid could be just the thing that Sprint needs right now.

    Thanks for the info!

I think sprint is preparing to announce a couple of things that are industry first:

WiMax and LTE network – industry first
    4G Windows 7 Phone – industry first
Open handset policy – bring any CDMA handset and they’ll activate it (will cool off $10 fee steam if u could use ur iphone wont it?) – industry first
New Blackberry/Android tablets – industry first

Sprint announces “Cyanogenmod Evergreen” agreement as a way to give their customers what they want at little expense. Sprint will sponsor Cyanogenmod 7 development for all existing Sprint android handsets and for devices shipping after June 2011.

LTE is later. Clear and Sprint are reviewing all options for network technology. We’re all stumped as to what Feb 7 is about, too.

Think about the reference to Magic. Magic is making something appear that was there the whole time but you didn’t know it. Magic is announcing that the largest 4G WiMax network is now the largest 4G LTE network too. Boom. Then throw in some LTE handsets… Not ruling anything out there, lots of great stuff announced at CES, did you see any WiMax handsets at CES? Sprints decision was made for it by the handset makers. They don’t want another scenario like with their legacy IDEN network. They are going to upgrade the firmware in all those WiMax towers to support LTE, the hardware is already there.

OK I’m going to go out on a limb here.

    The big announcement tomorrow?

Try this: A phone that folds out into a tablet.

It gets better, unlimited battery life.

    Talk about impossible = possible.
