Sprint will launch a bunch of LTE/CDMA smartphones and tablets by mid 2012

By: t-marco October 7th, 2011

Sprint said Friday that it will stop selling phones and other devices compatible with Clearwire Corp.’s current network at the end of the year, after it switches on its own higher-speed, fourth-generation data network LTE. By the end of next year, Sprint aims to have a combined WiMAX/LTE population coverage of 176 million — with 123 million covered by LTE and 76 million overlapping both.

The LTE band that Sprint will use is the 1900 bands A-G and the devices will be available mid 2012.  The regular CDMA/WiMax devices will continue to be sold through 2012 but eventually it will stop.

Clearwire, a Sprint partner, has said that it plans to build an LTE network in parallel with WiMax, and Sprint’s Hesse left the door open to having Sprint buy access to that network after 2012.
