HTC officially unlocks Android bootloaders

By: t-marco May 27th, 2011

HTC had a policy of locking the Android bootloaders for its Thunderbolt, Incredible S, Sensation and EVO 3D, but the company’s policy of locking bootloaders is gone.¬† This is the Facebook post form HTC page:

“There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we’ve listened. Today, I’m confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience.”

Pardon my ignorance here, I have rooted my phone and such but what is the significance of this move? what does the end user gain?? what impact does this have?

This means we dont have to wait for Dev’s to find a way to root our phones. They are now unlocked so right out of the box we can provide custom roms for them.

Does this apply only to future sold phones, or will the have an update to existing phones as well? I.e. I got my EVO back in Feb – would I have a way of “officially” unlocking my phone?

So what do you have to do if you already have a phone to get this unlock?

But what does this mean for those who already own an HTC like the EVO?

I actually sent them an email and got reply from them. HTC was being flooded on their fb page. Glad they listened.

So will they apply this retro-actively?
