Vision down for everyone? (error 3000)

Since yesterday afternoon, all I get from any attempt to use Vision is

Error Code 3000
Network timeout.
Please try again.

I'm getting worried. Is everyone getting this? Or is everyone in the Chicago area getting this? Or is everyone in DuPage County (western suburbs of Chicago) getting this?

It's actually attempting to make an EV-DO connection. If I had the MSL, I might be able to force it into 1xRTT mode to see if that works--but I don't have the MSL.

If I had the MSL, I could also try changing the IP gateway.

EDIT: OK, just now the phone finally tried regular 1xRTT, and made a connection properly. But will this last? Oh, how I wish there were a simple way to switch between EV-DO and 1xRTT.

It is now obvious that I am observing a serious network design flaw. The network apparently keeps broadcasting that EV-DO is available, but whenever my phone tries to use it, it receives Network Timeout. The one time that my phone happened to try 1xRTT, it easily made a connection; but the phone almost never tries that option, because EV-DO keeps falsely broadcasting that it is available!

It should now be obvious to everyone that the inability to easily manually switch between 1xRTT and EV-DO is a major misfeature. If this goes on much longer I will have to call up Sprint to get my phone's MSL so that I can put it into 1xRTT mode via the debugging menu.

How would that be done in the Debugging Mode?

Yeah, I live on the fringe on EVDO coverage, so I often have unuseable Vision coverage because it tries to get EVDO, waits waits waits waits waits waits, ok, I give up, time to connect to 1xRTT.

I need to either install a repeater antenna with a 30 foot mast for the antenna or somehow block all EVDO somehow.

I spoke to a Sprint technician. She gave me my MSL, I changed my phone to "1X Only Mode", and now I connect just fine.

Specifically, one must enter

##3282# (that stands for DATA)

Then select Hybrid Mode, and enter your MSL. You should get a menu offering

Hybrid Mode
1X Only Mode
EV-DO Mode

Select your choice, then (in the resulting menu) select Done. The phone will power-cycle itself and then use the mode you have chosen.

I am also in the Dupage County part of Aurora. Considering buying an A-900, but it sounds like EV-DO (PV) is shakey in this area. Maybe not worth it?

Sprints still hammering out the fine details on some of the new options like EV-DO, a new picturemail access, and the phones are still all in their first revision. As with most technology you can save yourself some strife and hold off a few months until all the problems have been found and addressed. The cutting edge causes bleeding and other such clichés.

You could use it as a strong argument for sticking with old ("grandfathered") Vision. You can tell them that at least one person in the area has not been able to access EV-DO in 24 hours, and would have been entirely up a creek except for the undocumented ability to force the phone into 1xRTT-only.

Hmm...worksforme.

BTW, is there any other way to obtain the MSL code than from sprint? Or at least, is there an easy way to obtain it from them?

As far as I know, the MSL must come from Sprint because it is a password rather than an algorithmically computed code. For example, many Nokia phones use a computed code, and that computation is available on the Web; but I don't think such is possible for Sprint phones.

Ordinarily, the simplest way to obtain your phone's MSL from Sprint is to swap its ESN onto another line. The rep must give you the MSL in order to reprogram the phone for another phone number.

By the way, if you are in the Naperville/Aurora area and your EV-DO is still working properly, let me know. I will then have to assume that someone or something has mysteriously goofed up my account. (I myself have made no changes in the account in several weeks.)

Hmm...they probably gave me my MSL code before then, because when I first received my phone they put it in the wrong area code, and the tech had me change it by hand

I wish I would have written down everything he was telling me.

Sanyo MM-9000. I believe I activated it on this line on December 4, so the fact that EV-DO stopped working on January 4 (also the last day of my Sprint billing period) could be significant.
