What is EVDO?
Finally, you can have wireless broadband internet access to your Windows laptop, Mac OS X laptop or Linux laptop without the need for a hotspot - you are the hotspot. Average download speeds 400K - 700K. Insert a EVDO PC Card into your laptop and seconds later, you are connected to the internet at very fast speeds. Many have been waiting for this ability for a long time, and it is here today.

EVDO or Evolution Data Only,Evolution Data Optimized, often abbreviated as EVDO, EV-DO, EvDO, 1xEV-DO or 1xEvDO, is a fast wireless broadband access (3G) without needing a WiFi hotspot (a common misspelling is EDVO). You are the hotspot. You can have fast internet access, anywhere. No need to find a hotspot. For example, get high speed internet access in a car, train, clients, anywhere you can open your laptop.

Currently, available is Verizon EVDO and Sprint EVDO (Sprint does not yet have any official EVDO coverage, but is working on it.)

Also, 1xEVDO is based on the 1xRTT standard. 1xRTT is basically available wherever cell phone coverage is and can give you 2-3 times dialup speed (both Verizon and Sprint offer this). Typical speed is 60 - 100K upload and download speeds. So, even if you are NOT in an EvDO area, you can still access the internet (learn more about 1xRTT vs. EVDO).

OK, I understand What is EVDO so, who Offers EVDO?

Currently Verizon Wireless is the leading provider for EVDO coverage, they have coverage in 32 major cities. Their coverage going to double in 2005. Sprint will offer be offering EVDO in 2005 - currently they do not officially have EVDO coverage. There are multiple PC Cards (require a PCMCIA slot) that are available, they are:

Sierra PC 5220
Novatel V620
Sierra AirCard 580
Kyocera KPC 650

The PC 5220 works with Windows, Mac OS X or Linux. All the cards work with Windows. We have directions on this site to make the other EVDO cards work with Mac OS X.

Insert this card into your PC or Mac laptop and you can be accessing the internet at near DSL speeds. The speeds will average around 500K - 700K. The costs are $79.99/month for unlimited access. There are usually different promotions going on when purchasing the PC Cards (e.g. get a Novatel V620 for $19.99).
Starting February 1, 2005, many new EVDO phones started to become available. These phones will hook up to the existing EVDO network to provide new cell phone services, such as real-time 3D games, TV (on your cell phone), and lost of other cool features.

How fast is EVDO?

Your signal strength determines how fast EVDO will be. You can have from zero to 4 bars. Here is a speed test with EVDO, while having 4 bars, the location was Schaumburg, IL from a laptop.
