I just got one for my wife and I just got the cable from 3GCables. The problem right now is that the only software that supports this phone is the Sprint Connection Manager. Futuredial, Datapilot and Bitpim do no yet support it, so you are not going to be able to use the cable to load and extract data from the phone. Hopefully this will change in the near future.

I got the FutureDial cable for this phone (from RadioShack) for around $20, though there seem to be cheaper cables on the web, and downloaded the Datapilot pix'n'tunes software, also around $20. This allows me to retrieve pictures off the phone, but putting ringtones on the Samsung A740 isn't supported.

Hey Rodney, My spouse and I both have the A740 but only I have Vision. He has some pictures in his phone that he wants to retrieve. Would you be kind enough to let us know the model of the cable as well as where did you downloaded the Datapilot software. Thanks. |

I purchased the FutureDial Mobile Phone Data Cable for Samsung A310, A600. The A740 is not listed but this is the right cable. (again from RadioShack)
Data Pilot software is at http://www.datapilot.com/shop_pntkit-software.htm I got the software download only. So I had to get the Samsung Drivers myself. Pics n tunes is a good way to get the pictures off the phone. FutureDial allows you to freely download the drivers at http://www.futuredial.com/support/do...SB_Drivers.htm I believe I used the first of the Samsung driver downloads, even though the A740 is not listed. Just tonight I downloaded the new BitPim software at http://bitpim.org/ (This is supported by donations) version BitPim 0.8.02. I was able access my phone from through the filesystem as a A310 phone. (There are disclaimers that you can hurt your phone this way) I was able to find the pictures, so I could copy them. off the phone for free this way, but with a little more work. I found I could also overwrite an existing ringtone with one I'd created. Though this time I overwrote it with one that I didn't create (bananaphone.qcp) The step by step process for this is longer than I want to attempt tonight so I may try to put something together over the next week. My Blog article on creating ring tones is here. http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/archives/12286 Good luck |

The Pics'n'Tunes is datapilot software, from susteen, but only pictures and ring tones.
Here's a site that has a better step by step for the Samsung A740, it still isn't intuitive, but I've been able to add new ring tones to my phone without internet access http://www.dagondesign.com/articles/...1000-sph-a620/ I did this using the newer version of BitPim |

Before everyone goes out to eBay for their a740, and buys a data cable for ringtones, apps and anigifs are safely uploaded/available by an uploader, such as:
http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/index.php My service provider isn't even close to Sprint (It's a subsidiary of AT&T Allstream in Canada) and if you read all the instructions...well I have tons of awesome ringtones converted uploaded in the past few hours. BitPim is great for viewing the file system, calendar, address book, but if your phone is having problems connecting these days, use his uplooader. It's not sexy, but damn - it works. A. |

With my Sprint Plan I would have to pay for internet access to do the down load, I think both rumkin and the sprintsuers uploader work OK, but if you don't have free web access with the phone I think you will need a data cable.
