Alternatives to an original SNES System?
My friend was at the mall before Christmas and picked up one of these:
It is basically a controller unit with 76 classic NES games preloaded and ready to play. It was so much fun, I started looking for an SNES version but now I can't even find this one anywhere except a few places online. Apparently it isn't licensed so the store in the mall doesn't have them anymore. Anyone have any idea where to get something similar (preferably legal) that has SNES games loaded? I've seen the stuff Wal-Mart has but the games aren't that great. I even bought an old SNES console at a Pawn Shop but the thing is a peice of junk. Remember blowing out the cartridges just to get them to play? This one requires it like every two minutes... |

It might be tough to make affordable, at least right now. NES games were typically 70-100KB, whereas most SNES games are just under a meg.. and in the last year or two of its life they got up to 8MB (and I think some were even 16MB).
So 76 NES games can be fit into an 8MB memory chip, but that many SNES games would require 64MB or more of memory. There's also significantly more processing overhead for an SNES game, further driving up the cost. I'm pretty sure I'm remembering the sizes correctly, though it may be Mb and not MB. In any case, the SNES version would require about 8 times the memory of an NES version. Also, a lot of the SNES games are coming out again as GameBoy Advance/SP/DS games. The handheld units have far eclipsed the games in terms of power. If they licensed the SNES games, it might interfere with things they are doing on the GameBoy line. Look at the recent Metroid game.. almost an exact copy of Super Metroid. Maybe in a few years. |

BTW, take a Q-tip and a little alcohol to the cartridge contacts as well as the slot in the SNES. Use only a little and give it overnight to dry out. Should help with the "blowing out" thing.

Those systems are available everywhere here in SoCal. I even have one plugged into my living room TV.
![]() If you're looking for a SNES/Genesis version, it does exist. It however has a different design... (Hint, look for what appears to be a slim white PS2)... [If I could find my picture of it, I'll post it] Not many places have 'the higher end' version...
