PPC6601 First Impressions...

Just got the PPC6601 in my hot little hands, and can give some very preliminary first impressions.

First the unit is pretty large, but very comfortable to hold. I would put it at the size of a slightly thick Ipaq 2215. The unit is VERY light though, I am very impressed with its weight. Very comfortable to hold and the sliding keyboard is VERY smooth and sturdy. I am not a big keyboard guy, and think its a wasted space to include one, but it is very nice with nice tactile feel to it.

The reception so far seems great. My office typically gets crappy reception, ranging from 0 bars on my old i600 to 1-2 bars on my VM4050. I am looking at my PPC6601 charging right now and it has 3 bars of signal, which is fabulous in my office.

Screen is beautiful for QVGA. It seems like they have nice hardware as I have been used to the VGA screen on my Loox 720, but I dont feel like I am taking that large of a step down.

Overall it looks like a great unit, I am in that 2-4 hour programming period so dont want to use it yet and mess anything up. Will post further impressions as I go along.

I dont have my camera at work, I can take some pics tonight, but have nowhere to host them =(. Not sure if vision is always on, but I doubt it bc that would interfere with incoming calls. Havent played with it too much, work calls, LOL.

So what all did it come with? I'm debating between the 6601 and the Treo 650. I like the smaller size and longer battery life of the Treo, but also like some of the PPC options of the 6601. I tend to wear my phone for easy access, and based on all I've seen the 6601 is probably a little large for a belt clip.

Also, does the 6601 support swappable batteries like the new Treo will?

Thanks for the info!

Keep us updated as to how you like it and your overall impressions! What I'd really like to know is if our vision cost will double to $30 when activating this phone.

It came with very nice stereo headphones, cradle, a pretty decent sideways case with belt clip, and an extra stylus.

I was able to activate it on my primary line, and just as happened with my i600, no one even batted an eye that is was a PPC device, they just added it onto my current free unlmited vision $85/2000 plan without asking, adding any extra connection charges, or changing my plan. I think you will run into trouble if you are putting this on a new line.

I must say it is a real pleasure to talk on this phone/PPC. The earpiece is PHENOMENAL, it is very clear, very loud and it sticks out a lot, which is good because it is actually very hard to press your cheek to the screen and grease it up. Have not asked yet how outgoing voice quality is. Have fired up Vision on it and browsed some picture intensive sites, so far seems MUCH faster than my old PPC with a T608 as a bluetooth modem. Will check into it more tonight after the gym. I have also installed a couple of MP3 programs on it and plan to test them out at the gym tonight.

The only thing is due to its size it kind of feels like I am going to drop it, you must be super careful when pulling it out of your pocket unless you have huge hands.

Hi,

Thanks for giving us the goods on this device! Does it have the standard sprint barrel charging port on the bottom in addition to the normal charging/data port?

Also, have you tried tethering via bluetooth?

Thanks again. I am holding out for the PPC-6600 (if I can wait that long )

aaahhhh the paper order - it's sitting in someone's desk drawer right now! Might as well buy yourself another phone and get double billed, at least that way you'll have a phone before the ppc6600 comes out in december because that's about when the paper order is going to go thru.

It has no receptacle for a barrel type charger unless you count on either the cradle, or it does come with an adapter that changes the sync port to a charger the same as most HP's come with.

When I called to check I just called telesales back and they gave me a tracking number.

The earpiece is almost too loud, LOL, wow it is nice. I have to put it at half volume. In case you guys did not know it has a HARDWARE volume button on the side which can control your phone volume and your PPC volume separately, mute, etc etc. Speakerphone is VERY good, and the mic is awesome from even a couple of feet away. One issue that has come up is if you have the PPC set to turn off after x minutes your call gets cut off, Im sure there is a fix for this just havent played around with it.

Another question for you (you didn't think you were going to get any work done today did you?): how are the other volumes and vibrate on the phone? That's one of my chief complaints about the Treo is that the ringer volume is too soft unless using the "Loud Phone" annoying ringer, and the vibrate is also under powered. Does the 6601 rate ok on those? Thanks!

How Fast is the Internet

I left Sprint a while ago for their lack of bluetooth. With this phone, is bluetooth crippled or can you use dailup networking to surf? Assuming you can use the phone to surf the net, which speeds are you getting? This is important since I wouldn't want to be in the 20k range. I believe a bluetooth connection will max at arount 100k, but that is good enough for me. Hopefully, it is connecting at the higher speeds.
