Angry Help!! Can't forward and IM from AIM as a text message!!!

Hi,

I have two phones in the account...a samsung and a Sanyo PM-8200. For some odd reason, I can't seem to get any IMs send as a text message from AIM to my Sanyo phone. I tried calling Sprint many times and they just give me a dumb answer and are not able to help me (although they did reprovision the phone once...). I also tried calling AOL to see if they were able to do anything about it, only to be told to contact sprint.

I don't believe it is AOL's fault since when I fwd an IM to my samsung phone and my friend's cell phone (who has the same exact model as me) who lives few doors down from me...it works fine without a problem. But the weird thing is, I seem to be able to receive txt msgs from other sources such as sprintpcs.com and other telephones fine (after the provision.)

What can I do about this??? Is there anyway to reset the txt msging profile or routing data stored on the phone? Fyi, the sanyo was not programmed with the right phone number when I first got it....

I really hope I can fix this cuz the phone ain't worth it without this option. URGH.. Thank for your help

Im having the same problems. I have a sanyo 8100. I have contacted both sprint and AOL and have not gotten any answers. I was told that AIM wasnt a supported application. Sprint blamed it on AOL and AOL blamed it on sprint.

AOL told me that Sprint PCS is only 1 way messaging. Sprint and Nextel are the only providers that have 1 way messaging - every other carrier has 2 way AIM. They said there wasnt anything they could do. I told both sprint and AOL that until 2 weeks ago, it has worked for the past year but quit working.

I was wondering if a new phone would work. I have rechecked my phone options and options on aim.com to make sure IM forwarding is enabled.

I was looking into this issue for myself as well, and this is what I found:

Here is where it shows on AOL's website what is available message-wise from AOL while on Mobile:
http://mymobile.aol.com/portal/im/index.html

Here is where they describe what cell networks work with their AOL Mobile:
http://mymobile.aol.com/portal/im/icons.html

According to the above link "One-way IM forwarding Mobile phone user cannot respond to messages from their mobile phone"... Which is what they say Sprint PCS has.

I can only assume that AIM is working the same way that AOL Mobile is working, and that Sprint PCS and AOL will not allow someone to respond because AOL is only sending the IM conversation as text messaging, and it isnt real time answerable, because its only one way because of Sprint.

I have written several letters and made several calls to both Sprint and AOL. I have not been able to find an answer. I recieved the letter below and called the number listed below. We tried various things for about 45 miuntes and I was then transfered to Vision helpdesk.

I was then told that AIM made some updates(he didnt tell me what kind of updates to their server about 3 weeks ago(the time I started having troubles). He also said AIM is not a supported application and that I was the first person to complain about it. He told me AIM is only compatible(the way we want it-2 way) on certain phones. I asked him what phones was it compatible on and he didnt know.

The person also told me I was the first person to call on this. I told him other people have been having troubles as well. He said if enough people call then they will probably do something about it. AOL told me that the only way it would be fixed is for Sprint to fix it on their ends. They tell me Sprint can only do 1 way IM forwarding and will have to make changes to support 2 way. Maybe if we can get enough people to complain, they will fix it.

The frustrating thing is, I have a friend next door to me who has the SAME exact phone (PM-8200) and his AIM fwding works perfectly. Also, I have another phone on the account (a really cheap samsung) and that too works perfectly. It is really frustrating although its not a big deal....that this doesnt work....

that is strange. The person at AOL suggested I take my phone to a sprint store and have them test it (and maybe reset the phone) - maybe by some strange reason some settings got switched around. I know I have NOT messed with my mobile IM settings on mymobile IM site(it still says IM enabled) and have not changed any of my phone settings with the exception of turning my volume on my phone to vibrate when I goto work.

The person from Sprint told me that AOL upgraded there servers about 3 weeks ago and their upgrade is the reason that AIM isnt working. When I called AOL the person said they didnt upgrade and there havent been any changes made.

I dont know how to go about doing it, but the best way would be to get sprint to allow the 2 way IM forwarding
http://mymobile.aol.com/portal/im/icons.html according to this site Sprint is only 1 way. I dont know what sprint would have to do (there would probably be something AOL would have to do also to allow this).

The other thing is to maybe see if there is a way to get a NEWER or different version of AIM on the vision site

I'm also experiencing the same problem. I have a Treo 600 that used to work with AIM's IM forwarding on the default phone number that came with SprintPCS. I ported over a personal phone number from Verizon Wireless into a Sprint business account. The porting process was a nightmare that lasted 3-4 days. After the phone part of the Treo 600 was working, I tried IM forwarding but was not able to get the confirmation txt msg from AOL. The phone receives txt messages fine from other providers and is able to sent out txt messages, but it just can't receive the confirmation msg. I've been searching on this issue for the longest time and this is the first time I'm reading about it from other people.

Everyone else that's having this problem, did your problematic phone numbers go through a porting process from one provider to another? or from a personal to a business account?

I am betting that the handsets you have that do not work have a MSID and MDN that do not match and the ones that work do match. And no, there is no way to make them match. This seems to be the cause, but it is not caused by Sprint, as all other messaging works correctly.

If you know or can find out if you MSID and MDN are different and the ones that work are the same, I might be able to escalate this issue to someone that might be able to help.

What I've discovered is when I had a SPCS issued phone number, it worked just fine, but once you port in a #, you're out of luck. I had a SPCS issued number (417-234-xxxx, and the MSID was 417-496-xxxx and it worked), however, when I ported in a number (417-869-xxxx), it stopped working. (Kept same MSID)

Well I've never done AIM FW. I just made up a screen name for AIM I use only when I sign on to AIM from my phone. I only have certain people tha are on my list and if they see I am on-line they can IM me. They know it takes me longer to respond. I wish it was more like 2 way SMS back and forth but at least I can reply. Now if someone puts my 10 digit # on there buddy list and IM'S me then I can't reply but I get it as a text message right away. So that is why I just made up an addional AIM screen name then the one I use at home just to use on AIM on my phone. Rose

If this is the case, I would lean toward AOL being the cause of the problem. It sounds like they do not update their database of numbers, so if you had one carriers number and then switched, they are still sending the msg to the first network.
Can others confirm this? Are the others having this issue been ported numbers?
