Lightbulb A700 Tips & Tricks

Now that a fair amount of people have their hands on this phone, let's open up a thread for tips and tricks. That way, those that don't have this phone yet can advance to "power user" status more quickly, and those that do will hopefully learn something useful.

I'll start:

1. A shortcut to saving phone numbers (it's actually highlighted in the manual, but I wouldn't have found out otherwise): Type in the number you want to save, and simply press the "OK" button, instead of "Options">"Save". Either way, the phone immediately pops up a dialog asking if you want to create a new entry or edit an existing one.

2. Browse channels while watching video clips: When viewing multimedia in the Media Player, press up or down to view other available clips on the current channel.

Any others that you think are useful? Maybe if someone figures out how to download AAC ringers, that could go in here, as well. Have fun with it.

Ok, since everyone is trying to figure out how to download AAC ringers, im gunna help a bit in hopes that someone starts a site hosting them...the file extension for *either* an AAC ringer OR an MP4 ringer is .m4a so all that needs to be done is to create a gcd file with .m4a as the extension of the file. Good luck to the first person that tries this and succeeds. Of course, post here if you do. BTW, there are already over 100 AAC ringers on sprintpcs.com @ $2.50 a pop (2 free a month w/ download credit). I have downloaded a bunch on our demo phone and they sound excellant.

I have a web server that I can use to host the ringers. send them to me I will see if I can get it working.

My a700 comes on Friday

I have been working on this. I do not have my samsung to see if the format works, but I have successfully downloaded it incompatibly to my vm4050.

First, if you have access to the .htaccess file edit it and add the line...

"AddType audio/aac .m4a"

Minus quotes of course.

Once you have done that create your aac/m4a file and then create a gcd file for it that looks something similar to....

Content-Type: audio/aac
Content-Name: ringer
Content-Version: 1.0
Content-Vendor: creator
Content-URL: http://www.url.com/ringers/ringer.m4a
Content-Size: 86812

(Note: you don't need a gcd file creator program to create it, you can make your own gcd file in notepad with the above simple text and change the .txt extension to gcd. That is what I do personally.)

Doing that I can tell you the phone will successfully download the file, then it's up to the phone to play it

Follow up: if anyone with the a700 would like to try it, here is the link for the test of my first A700 aac ringer.

Well, it downloaded fine, and I have it on my phone, but a specifici handler is required to play the m4a file. When I clicked the link to get the handler file, it forwarded me to the Content Manager to purchase Sprint's ringers. So technically, I suppose, the m4a ringers are only compatible with the phone after you buy Sprint's AACs at least once.

Any thoughts? Anyone know what kind of handler we might need?

the only difference when going to properties is the size of course and the sprint downloaded AAC says "Description: AAC Ringer for Samsung A700" so just add that and it will work fine. heh. i wish.
