Sanyo SCP 7200/RL2000 reviewed

Since no one else has done a comprehensive review of this phone (though I don't know if anyone cares...) I figured I would.

The 7200 came into my life as a warranty replacement for my 4900.

Essentially, the two are identical. There are some differences.

Let's get the cons of this bad boy out of the way.

Bad: this phone, weighing in officially at 5.3 ounces is a monster. I thought my last phone was huge, but by comparison, the 4900 was tiny.
From time to time I press the ReadyLink button on accident. It's a bit annoying. And every time I power the phone up it asks if I want to sign up for RL, which I don't. Also a tad annoying.

The in-between: this phone is a monster. Yeah, I know it's a bit of a bummer, but on the other hand I know I'm never going to break this phone. At least not accidentally. There's something nice about having a phone in your hand that feels solid.
And there is something nice about knowing that if I wanted to, I could enable RL and use it. At some later date that could be useful.
The screen is about the same, but it seems a bit more vibrant. This could just be me hallucinating or something.
Oh, and it's blue. That's kinda cool. It matches my car.

The good: I like the UI on this phone because it is virtually the same as on the 4900. That was part of why I purchased the 4900 in the first place. What has changed about it is that it runs much faster. The menu scrolls faster, the web loads faster, Short Mail messages are typed and sent faster. Twice as fast, I'd reckon. Now it certainly can't rival the cable connection on my home computer and I can't compare it to other phones aside fromthe 4900. My first handset was a TP1100 and I didn't surf the web on that phone. I don't know if I even could. Anyway...
Reception is still excellent everywhere I go. I can make and receive calls at work, in the mall, on the road and so on.
The battery life is equally impressive. I got the phone on Sunday, when I fully charged it. It was down to one bar of battery life today, six days later. That's as good as my 4900. And it should be; the batteries are identical. There is one difference I noticed: surfing the net didn't suck nearly as much battery life on the 7200 as it did on my 4900. Nor did playing games.
Ah, yes, the arrow pad is much better for games with the menu key moved to the side. Well, Pac-Man runs much better on the 7200. It loads faster and plays faster. The arrow pad is more responsive, too.

Overall I'm quite pleased with the phone, despite its bulkiness. I would not have selected this phone under other circumstances. In fact, I have been seriously eyeing the VM4500. With good battery life again (my 4900's battery was defective, hence the new phone) I'm reluctant to give it up, even though I really miss having a flip phone form factor. I'm halfway to my next handset upgrade rebate, so I may just wait it out.

But, if I do get a clamshell style phone in the spring, I don't think I'll ebay the 7200 right away, if at all. It's the reliable, dependable, grown up phone that I think would be good to keep around just in case.

If any of you out there have a teenage son, this would be a good phone for them, or a guy with big hands. It also seems like it would be a great phone for the business customer because it's so durable. Your employees won't be coming back telling you the phone is busted yet again...the one you pay for. Heh. Same with the teenager. Nor will they lose it. You ain't gonna forget this phone somewhere. You'll know if it isn't where it's supposed to be.

This phone is not for everyone, but if you end up with one somehow, you'll be pleased with it.
