I Found out how to read the MSL off your phone with a DATA cable!!!!
I downloaded a program called BitPim. you can get it from http://bitpim.sourceforge.net/ It allows you to view the filesystem, and even change it. I tried it with me VM4500, and I saved the filesystem onto my laptop. I was browsing the files, and found one with The MSL for my phone. Tried it & it let me into the programming mode. gointo folder /nvm/nvm and there is a file called nvm_0002 that has the info. It has your secerity code, and then it has 2 six digit numbers after that. The 2nd one is you MSL. The first one is one you can use only once. Now if you want to activate your phone on verizon, I bet you could change the MSL to 000000, and then you could do an OTA activation, and it would put the Verizon PRL on your phone. Then all you would need it the ip settings and stuff for the data to work on verizon too. If you fry your phone by modifying this, don't blame me, I haven't tried it.

Get the 0.7-test1 versoin, thats the one I used. It has support for the 4900 and the 8100, and will read the file structure on most CDMA phones-- at least it says it will, so it worked on my vm4500.

I tried the bitpim-0.7-test2 program on both a 8100 and a 5350 using a straight USB cable (no box in the middle), and it works on both phones (only the file system works on the 5350). The MSL on the 5350 is located in the "/sch/memo.dat" section, not in the /nvm/nvm section, so it may be in a different place for different model phones (I already knew my PRL, so I knew what to look for). The PRL will be in the format "00XXXXXX00", the number BETWEEN the two sets of zeros is the PRL. BTW, I use the native Win XP.2 SP-1 drivers on each model phone furnished by the phone manufacturer to MS with the straight cable, not the Future Dial furnished one, and am able to use all the Future Dial and bitpim software with no problems. Maybe Sprintusers can post the location directory for the PRL on different phones. |

I found the MSL for Sanyo 8100!
Through trial and error I found the MSL for a Sanyo 8100.
It's in the nvm/nvm/nvm_0002 file. Look on line 80 starting on the 4th digit. The next 6 digits are your MSL, at least they worked to unlock my phone. Very cool software! Thanks. |

Reading further into the BitPim, it sounds as if it will allow you to transfer ALL files from the phone. Will this mean that you will be able to transfer the applications/games downloaded via Vision to the computer and then up to another phone? I'm assuming there will be some sort of licensing issue though. Anyone tried this?
I should be getting my data cable today Yippie!

I haven't been able to find the applications or ringers on the filesystem on my phone.

I can not get my 4900 to connect with a straight USB cable. I only have the option for COM1.

I had to manually type in COM3 on mine because it wouldn't automatically detect it. Then it will work. I Guess I should of mentioned that. OOps.

Coolness! Downloads can be copied off the phone! I just got my full purchased copy of Monkey Ball off my phone, removed the expiration date (which is in the .JAD file, great security there), and re-uploaded it!
I didn't re-upload with Bitpim, though. I haven't tried any write operations with it yet. Also, the VGA1000 has the lock code in nvm/nvm/nvm_0002 like the 8100 as listed above. You'll see the number 040793 (Sprint's default debug code), then your lock code, then a six-digit number I don't recognize, then the MSL, right there in the clear. Awesome!

I had to put COM3 to get anywhere with my 4900, it seemed to download, but I got this error, I can't see any data:

You said just put com3... (I am at work right now so I don't have access to my BitPim) Can you manually type that in?
