T-Mobile adds 1.8 million subscribers in first quarter of 2015

T-Mobile The Un-carrier
After Verizon and AT&T reported their Q1 2015 results last week, it’s T-Mobile turn to spill its beans.

T-Mobile says that it added a total of 1.8 million subscribers in the first three months of 2015, marking the eighth quarter in a row that T-Mo managed to add more than one million subs. That total includes 1.1 million postpaid adds and 73,000 prepaid adds. T-Mobile’s postpaid churn — the rate at which postpaid customers left the carrier during the quarter — finished at 1.3 percent, a decrease from 1.7 percent in Q4 2015. When the quarter came to an end, T-Mobile had 56.8 million customers in all.

T-Mo also gave us an update on its network. The magenta carrier says that at the end of Q1 2015, its 4G LTE network covered 275 million people and that it expects that number to grow to 300 million by the end of 2015. Wideband LTE, which increases network bandwidth and capacity to offer faster data speeds, is now available in 157 markets across the U.S. That number is expected to surpass 200 markets by year-end.

On the prepaid side, T-Mo says that around 80 percent of MetroPCS’s old CDMA network had been refarmed for use with T-Mobile at the end of Q1, with Atlanta and Detroit’s CDMA networks getting decommissioned during the quarter. There are still three major markets in which Metro’s CDMA network is alive, with around 500,000 MetroPCS customers still on CDMA. T-Mobile expects to decommission those remaining three networks this year.

T-Mobile CEO John Legere

T-Mobile’s financials for the quarter include total revenues of $7.8 billion and a net loss of $63 million, the latter of which is a decrease from the income of $101 million that T-Mo reported in Q4 2014 but an improvement from its $151 million loss in Q1 2014.

The first quarter of 2015 looks like it was mostly good for T-Mobile, with the carrier adding nearly two million subscribers and giving it two years of big customer growth. It’s clear that T-Mo’s Un-carrier initiatives are bringing subscribers into the magenta family, and while the loss does put a bit of a damper on today’s report, T-Mobile CEO John Legere is just pleased with the customer growth:

“We’ve had eight consecutive quarters with more than one million total net customer additions proving that customers want value. We expect to once again capture all of the industry’s postpaid phone growth in Q1 and we’ve done it while delivering an all-time record low 1.3% churn. #WeWon’tStop.”

Good to see the perception change. It was hard working for them on the account management side.
