In addition, AT&T will merge its Mobility and Business Solutions divisions. The new, merged group will focus on delivering integrated solutions for business customers and will be overseen by Ralph de la Vega, who was previously AT&T Mobility's CEO and who will now have a new title of CEO of AT&T's Mobile & Business Solutions Group. Andrew Geisse, the CEO of AT&T Business Solutions, is retiring after 35 years with the company.

According to an AT&T spokesman, the company has been working for some time to integrate its wireless and wireline operations, and now it is integrating its marketing and distribution for the business solutions group into AT&T's Mobility division. The spokesman added that business-related customers generate more than 50 percent of AT&T's mobile revenues. The AT&T Business Solutions group has more than 3.5 million business customers and provides solutions and services for global enterprises, U.S. federal, state and local governments and small businesses.

AT&T's restructuring is notable in that Sprint (NYSE: S) earlier this month replaced its longtime CEO Dan Hesse with Brightstar founder Marcelo Claure. Claure has already initiated aggressive price cuts at Sprint and more changes are expected to follow.

Lurie, who was named a "Rising Star in Wireless" in 2010 by FierceWireless, is a longtime AT&T veteran who gained prestige in the company by negotiating with Apple to bring the iPhone exclusively to AT&T in 2007. Most recently, Lurie oversaw the launch of AT&T's Digital Life home automation product as well as the carrier's efforts in the connected car and tablet sectors.
