If you dont know what a VPN is then typically you dont need to use one.

(V)irtual (P)rivate (N)etwork.

A VPN lets you use your device as if the network was local. For instance, you could set up a VPN at home and then be a thousand miles away and the VPN magic would make your device think you were at home on your network and not whomever's network you really were on.

It provides security and anonymity depending on the VPN you are connected to. Some home routers allow you to set up VPN. There is also software to set up VPN and there are also third party providers that charge you a fee to use their VPN.

A good example of the use of a third party VPN would be using the BBC app to stream UK shows to your phone. That's made possible because you'd be connected to a UK VPN and the BBC app would be fooled into thinking you were in the UK when you're really in the US.

There are also free public VPNs, but those have limitations usually (amount of data you can use per month) and you are trusting your privacy to an unknown party.
