"Spending limit program charge"?

Maybe I should have put this in the rants sections...

I just came back to Sprint after leaving around a year ago. On the "My Account" page in the "Plan Details" section, the following is listed....

Quote:
Spending Limit Program Charge.....$4.99
What the heck is that all about? Why am I being charged $4.99 for a bogus "program" that I'm not even in? Heck, I was approved for 5 lines with no deposit when I signed back up, even though I only need 1 line!!! Why should I (and I assume everyone else) be charged a fee every month because some irresponsible clown doesn't pay his bills on time?

Sprint put that policy into effect in 2010 IIRC. They charge you $4.99 per month but will waive the fee if you sign up for Autopay and have your bill debited automatically from your checking account.

Before I left Sprint around a year ago, I had been with them for 8 years. For the last 6 of those years, I didn't have a spending limit. At the time, I could even buy a phone and charge it to my account.

If this is the way Sprint treats customers that come back after leaving, it's no wonder they are shedding customers faster than they can sign them up. I wonder if they understand that nothing is forcing me to stay, especially if I am going to be RIPPED OFF UN-necessarily.

That's how all customers are treated that have a spending limit not just returning customers. Ripped off? Pretty much.

I thought Sprint assesses that fee when you have shaky credit?

Thats good to know then. That was the reason they gave to my cousin when he had Sprint and they were charging him that fee. I was never charged the fee. What exactly is it for then? All new customers have to pay it?

I can't figure out what sort of a "limit" I may go over. I have the Everything Data plan with 450 anytime minutes. There is no way I'll go over the minutes, especially since I have "Any Mobile Any Time" and 99% of those I talk to have cell phones.

Besides, if my credit what all that bad, why would they approve me for 5 lines with no deposit?

Well I know my cousin's credit was/is pretty bad. I don't know if he was approved for 5 lines, but I know he was approved for atleast 3 lines because thats how many he had and he didn't have to put money down either. They told him that because he credit wasn't that great that he was approved but he would have to have this spending limit fee.

they ONLY give that to people who have a spending limit, if you dont have one and you're seeing this charge, call customer care. now it could be that you canceled mid contract? who knows. just call and get it removed if you dont have a spending limit.

So after a quick google I believe I was originally right in that they charge you the $4.99 spending limit if your credit is not all that great:

Here's some helpful information for you if you're part of our Account Spending Limit Program. The decision to place you in the program is based on information provided to us by an outside credit service when you authorize a credit history check.

About your spending limit

Your Spending Limit is the monthly maximum amount of spending per phone on your account based on your credit decision. For accounts with multiple phones, the total spending limit is calculated as the number of phones on the account multiplied by the spending limit per phone

My sister has been paying that fee since about 2010...I told her I would have moved to TMobile long time ago- fudge that. But I didnt trust her to pay her bill enough to transfer her line to my account either....lol

I have learned my lesson never never ever add friends or family to your account if you dont plan on paying their bill.

At this point in time, I don't have any idea *why* I have a spending limit on my account. But I fully intend on finding out. One thing I *DO* know is that at NO TIME while signing up or any time during the whole process was I EVER told I'd be charged 5 bucks a month because my credit was allegedly bad. The fee wasn't even mentioned, and I would never have known about it if I hadn't noticed it on my account. In fact, until yesterday that charge WAS NOT EVEN THERE. It only showed up since last night.

It's a BS charge. You get absolutely nothing in exchange for the fee. Once you're on it, they won't remove it until you have at least 13 months of on-time payments. You can avoid the fee by enrolling in autopay, but you'll still be subject to the limit.
