Epic 4G or Evo Shift?

Between these two phones, leaning towards the Epic since it has the better specs and apparently better keyboard. Could use any insight you guys can provide though. Thanks.

random airplane mode and random reboots when tethering.

the airplane mode has always happened, the tethering i havent updated the phone now that GB is out because my buddy uses it so i cant report if the newest update fixes it.

also mine liked to randomly lockup sometimes too.

battery overheating when charging sometimes (that could be the cases fault)

Had an EVO shift in the family and it was good. From what I hear, the Epic is good too. My issue is this. The Epic has been out for over a year and just got Gingerbread pushed this week. The Shift has had it a lot sooner.

Samsung is terrible IMO for updating it's phones. Sure, they have promised to do better, but I'm still waiting to see the results. Yes, I have a Nexus S, but that will get updates on Google's schedule, not Sammy's. I may also get the Galaxy Nexus if Sprint gets it, but again that phone will be updated according to Google.

I also think since the Epic is a over a year old, this will be it's last update. It's already pretty much been decided that the EVO and the Shift won't be getting ICS and the Shift is the newest of all (albeit with a slightly slower processor).

In closing, I think depending on your usage needs, both would be good phones for the short term. If you close to renewing your contract there are better out there.

Maybe not better, but you may want to look at the XPRT and Admiral. Both are Android phones, unless you want a BB. I've heard some good things about both, but I haven't used them. For a while, Sprint had a fresh line-up of keyboard phones, now it seems the trend is leaning more and more toward touchscreen phones.

I know you have probably already decided on a phone but I want to put my 2 cents in for anyone else trying to decide on a phone. I work on these phones every day. Steer clear of the Evo shift. Touch screen is crap. The hinge has no spring action. It uses friction to stay open. Crappy design. Look at the price drop it has had over the past year.

The epic is a great device. However, there are much better phones out now. I am not an android fan. But that is because the users think they can download 50 apps and wonder why it runs slow.

If you want a solid device, go with Apple. 40% of our sales are iPhones now and we seldom see on in for ANY problems. We see android phones in everyday with minor issues.

Keep doing your homework before you buy a phone. And for gods sake. Buy a phone off of a dealer. Don't get it online and expect the dealer to help you set it up. That is like buying a tv from wal-Mart and going to sears to ask questions on what to do with it.

Dont get the Evo 4G shift.

Most of them have defective 3.5mm Jacks. Look it up in yahoo/aol/google search lots of complains. I just tried the 4G Shift today and Its going back to the store as a return today (Used it for 5 days).

Evo Shift 4G

The Jack makes a "Skipping" Sound like theres a short between the Left-Right +/- in the jack itself. Plugged it up to my car Aux and I couldn't enjoy a minute of it. It just kept annoying the sh*t out of me. Overall its a nice phone in appearance but its made me go back to my BlackBerry within a week.

FYI: While I am here research "Carrier IQ" its built into these phones and its tracking-logging software. :|

The Shift is a more solid phone than the Epic, with a better hinge, better keyboard, and more reliable radio.

I carried both, so here are my two cents - The shift has a few things going for it- fewer sw bugs, quicker sw updates, and the sliding keyboard is much more solid. OUTSIDE OF THE SW ISSUES, i preferred the Epic 4G simply bc i didn't have said issues once I rooted it. If you are brave, and want to tweek your phone, get the epic. if you want one that you aren't going to chance much out of the box, get the shift

Wait, there is an Apple with a physical keyboard? (Since that's what this thread is about.) I need a new phone for my daughter who hates typing on a touchscreen and would love to find an iPhone with a physical keyboard.

Think also about the reboot issues with the Shift, I would not buy one until HTC fixes that issue. Gets really annoying, real fast!

I like the Shift's staggered keyboard better than the Epic. Everything else about the Epic is superior. Just look at both screens side by side with the brightness turned up and the Epic blows away the shift. I have dropped my Epic several times without a crack, scratch or chip on the Gorilla Glass. My sister had her Shift knocked out of her hands once and the screen spidered.

I LOVE my Epic and often give it big, slow, sloppy wet kiss.

--- Then, I give it a good buffing.
