Sprint conducting trial to reduce SMS SPAM, you can help

To help reduce SPAM text messages that are being delivered to our CDMA customers’ mobile devices, we are conducting a trial with a new system that gives employees and customers the ability to report SPAM text messages they receive. The goal of the trial is to collect data that will help eliminate SMS SPAM which will not only improve the customer experience but also reduce costs.

During the trial period, which ends Aug. 31, if an employee or customer gets an SMS that they deem as SPAM, they can forward the SMS to shortcode 7726 (SPAM) to report it as SPAM. Those messages reported as SPAM will be provided to a group internally who will analyze the information and take corrective action to potentially block the source for all customers. If evidence of SMS abuse is discovered and fraud is occurring then Sprint will take counter measures to block the source so other customers will not receive the same SPAM messages in the future.

There is some evidence that a high percentage of more than 1,000 high-usage SMS customers are currently using automated bulk messaging software to SPAM customers when they are on our CDMA network. We currently provide the ability for a customer to block abusive SMS SPAM on case-by-case basis but this will take it a step further by trying to eliminate mass SMS SPAM.

We are asking for employees to participate by forwarding any text messages they perceive to be SPAM to shortcode 7726 and to tell friends and family about the trial so they can participate as well.

In the near future, we will be joining other carriers to offer a method for customers to report SMS SPAM and abuse and this trial will provide needed information to help determine the best way to make that happen.
