Sprint kicks off Echo sales

Sprint kicks off Echo sales

A small crowd outside the Sprint store in New Philadelphia waits to buy the Echo early Thursday morning.

NEW PHILADELPHIA —
Before the sun rose over the morning sky to light up the Tuscarawas Valley, hardy souls already had lined up early Thursday outside the Sprint store in temperatures hovering near zero for the chance to be among the first purchase the new Kyocera Echo.

Thursday marked the first day the Echo was widely available from a wireless service provider in the United States.

Chris Edwards of Gnadenhutten had been waiting in line outside the store at 507 Mill Ave. SE since 4:30 a.m., but he thought the phone was worth the wait. “It was worth it, absolutely,” he said.

Edwards said he owns other Kyocera products, and it made sense to purchase the Echo.

Sprint employees handed out coffee, hot chocolate and hand warmers to customers before the doors opened at 7 a.m.

Nathan Douglas of Dennison already has an iPhone, but he was making the switch to Sprint because he said he was tired of just one screen.

Douglas, a funeral director for the Geib Funeral Home in Dover, also thought the phone was worth standing in the cold.

“I can’t live without my phone now,” he said.

All 15 employees of the New Philadelphia Sprint store were on duty Thursday to serve customers, according to store manager Russell Peterson. Normally, his store has eight to 10 employees on hand on any given day. Peterson, who came to work at 4:30 a.m., said he anticipated that his store would be busy throughout the weekend.

He said there is a great deal of pent-up demand for the Echo, which he described as an “iconic device.” He said it is a full multi-media device which allows users to check the Internet and e-mail at the same time. There also are 300,000 applications available for the Echo.

Sprint, the third-largest wireless provider in the country, has a couple dozen million customers, but Peterson wasn’t certain how many there are in Tuscarawas County. But his store has an average of 7,500 door swings per month.

Peterson said he didn’t anticipate a shortage of the Echo, adding that Kyocera is manufacturing as many of the phones as it can. “We have enough for today,” he said. But for the weekend? “I hope,” he answered.

If the store runs out, it can order more, and customers won’t have a long wait, he said.

I live in NY and in my area there were no lines for the iPhone at Verizon stores either. Take it for what it is, but thats just the way it was on Long Island.

That's because they had 500,000 pre-orders. Anyone who was desperate to have it the first day got it on the pre-order.
