If i change my number, how long does my old number remain inactive?

I have to assume they don't give the number back out immediately. (i) Is their a 60 or maybe 90-day hold period? (ii) What happens when people call or text that number before it given back out?

The number goes back into the pool of generally available numbers after 60 days. If someone calls or texts that number they get the message that the number is no longer in service. There is no forwarding or other access to your old number the minute you port out.

Back in the day you could ask for a non-used number. With the amount of numbers out there, I think that is pretty hard to do now.

So, I called Sprint to verify.

1) First agent says there's a 30-day hold. If I change my mind about the cancellation they can typically give me the number back within a month or so.

2) Second call, a different rep tells me, "That number goes back into the pool after only a 24-hour hold. Once you terminate the number you won't have longer than a day to get it back -- if at all."

Don't you just adore the consistency in Sprint's customer service?
