NOW OFFICIAL changes to SERO allowing "restricted" devices to be activated.

A rumor has been posted that on October 1, 2010 their will be additional options available for SERO customers to activate devices that are otherwise restricted. This rumor has had some weight given to it based on the fact that the SWAC plan's are supposed to be having similar changes.

The rumors are:

$10 charge for blackberry, like they currently charge. Added benefit for any mobile any time and GPS navigation.

The ability to activate a Palm Pre or Pixi, Instinct family device, or 3G android device for $10 more per month, also with any mobile any time and GPS navigation.

An additional $10 charge, for $20 more per month for the 4G devices EVO and Epic. The same "any mobile any time" and GPS navigation included, as well as 4G where available.

It appears that you will be able to "downgrade" to the base SERO plan if you choose a "dumb" phone, or non-restricted smart phone such as WM 6.X device.

You will likely have the option to pay the extra $10 per line for any device for AMAT and GPS if you want to, but it will not be required.

Corrections (with source for verification) can be sent via PM to me.

As an update:

I emailed my Sprint PR rep and she said that:

Quote:
Hi Dan-

I checked with our pricing team and Sprint has not announced anything at this time.
Having said that, a support rep told me that their are supposed to be some changes coming, though they may make SERO another plan, etc. The $10 increase seems true, but if the plan will still be SERO or be another plan made up for these changes remains to be seen.

Once I get information that is from a trusted Sprint source, or someone gets an email about these changes and forwards it to me, this thread will be open for the celebration

Edit:

We have closed 2 threads discussing the changes, because they became more about flaming posts and less about the actual changes that are rumored. When anything is confirmed, we will open this thread so it can be discussed in a respectful way.

OK, its official:

http://delivery.sprint.com/m/p/nxt/e...lse&popup=true

http://community.sprint.com/baw/thre...C3E0.app1jive1

Starting 10/1/10, current SERO customers will have the option to upgrade to a SERO Premium rate plan which will support all of Sprintís phones including the latest and coolest ones. There will be two flavors offered: the SERO Premium 500 at $40/month and SERO Premium 1250 at $59.99/month and will match current SERO rate plans with two added features: Any Mobile Anytime and Unlimited GPS Navigation. 4G handsets such as HTC EVO 4G and Samsung Epic 4G will also require the $10/month Premium Data add-on.

Dan, would you be so kind to ping your contact in PR about legacy plans such as Fair & Flex family plan 800? I'd love to jump on this train.

I will inquire, certainly. I feel that this *may* be the 1st step to allowing a "buy up" for legacy plans, but will not be available on 10/1 for anything but SERO.

Thanks Dan!! From your sources, do you know if we can add a PAM plan? Last time i tried i was rejected bc sero wasn't compatible with it (I know there is probably a hack for this, but still interested in the proper way)

Glad to finnally have a choice... Hmmm decisions decisions...

TP2 now has a very workable froyo on it, and the TP2 is an awesome phone...

IDK if i can justify paying 20$ for an epic/evo, the only phones i think worth it at this moment to upgrade to...

How do you guys like the 4g? I don't websurf too much on my phone, don't see why i should get 4g!! Maybe if they got netflix on it

this is great news but this seems to be the only downside:

Quote:
As a SERO/Everything Plus customer, are there restrictions on where I can upgrade my device?
Yes. You can upgrade through any of the following channels: any Sprint-owned Retail Store, Telesales (888-882-4030), or Sprint.com. You will not, however, be able to upgrade your device through a 3rd party dealer or national retail partner and you will not be required to provide a referring employee's email address and CID in order to upgrade your device.
may miss out on some good deals through 3rd party retailers...

But it does not mention anything about the BIS add on.... Will the BIS addon be automatically included in the Initial $10.00 addon?

A bunch of people with blackberries on their SERO plan got notices stating they were being switched to the SERO premium plan. So take that for what it is worth.

Talking Q's about Text and 3rd party purchases...

I am happy to see this go official, but it looked to pretty much be there for a few weeks. I will probably be getting the EVO or the Epic in December when my upgrade is available... two questions:

(1) I see that they talk about the GPS and the mobile2mobile being added, but how will text and picture mail work? I have a SERO 500 with 500 msg's on my account... will it automatically go to Unlimited Messaging when I upgrade to the "SERO 500 Premium"? My guess is yes, anyone got an official answer?

(2) I have noticed the restriction to buying at 3rd parties, but have also heard of people getting them from Best Buy (I am considering the white EVO so this would be really important, not to mention lack of rebates). What is the consensus on eligibility of buying from there?

Thanks!!

I too, am wondering about BIS. Also, all the rumor discussions seem to indicate that Sprint TV will also be included. The Sprint announcement does not indicate so. Does anyone know if Sprint TV is part of the deal?

Thanks.

I finally gave the link you posted to a sprint rep and walked her though the site to get to the post on sprint.com

Cause they wanted to see it on a sprint website.

Finally got them to admit it even though they hated to do so.

Thank for your post and i am glad now i got that 100% proof and them to notate my account that come OCT 1ST when it happends they will take care of me..

thanks for your work on it.
