I believe the "new" one is the "Sprint Airave" by airvana while the older ones were "Samsung Airave" devices. Sprint is not really pushing the manufacturer's name on the new ones, just calling them a "Sprint" device.

Now, to see if any return kit comes in for the old one. The rep said he would be sending me one (fine) for it, and indicated that it was important because otherwise I would be having 2 airave devices active with the $5 monthly charge on each. I have no problem sending it back, as long as they get me a UPS label to put on the original brown cardboard box.

I'd have to guess Sprint will soon be "flush" with Samsung Airave devices.

I'll have to check my original E-Mail tonight from Sprint to see what it was they sent me back in June. I'm pretty sure it's the 2.0 version, and it only does 1x data, even though they say it doesn't support data at all.

And I can confirm that the Airave plus does do 1X data. As I have the 2nd generation airave. There was the intial Airave, 1st generation, then they replaced it with the 2nd generation that was a much better design and supported data. however, the 2nd generation airave always has a hiss and weird crackling noise for the person I'm talking to. Annoying. I have to reboot the airave and it goes away for a short time and then comes back. I hate it. I always have to hangup on the person that I'm talking to and tell them I will call them back...

Nice that this one arrives already activated, unlike the "original" one that I had to call and activate.

I will make sure to deactivate the "old" one once the "new" one arrives, and then wait for the return kit. My device is:

AIRAVE® Access Point

I just ordered one to swap out with my old one and the order status page also says 2.0. That's gotta be the new one.

I just hope they might activate the VOIP port soon for a reasonable MRC. I think Sprint would love to get the Sammys out of service and swap with these new ones just for this reason. I would love to ditch my current VOIP company.

That being said, it will be interesting to see how my setup goes since the Airave has to sit between the modem and router, currently being occupied by my VOIP router. Hopefully I can place one of them IFO the router without a problem......

Well shucks.. just checked my email from sprint dated 5/13/10, and this is the unit they sent me:

Part Description Qty
SAMSUNG AIRAVE PLUS KIT 1

So, when you guys get the 2.0, please let me know if it does the EVDO, that way I can ask them to send me one, too

My guess is, Sprint may let you use VoIP for the $20 monthly "unlimited" buy up fee.

As far as where it goes, from what I have seen you can connect it in between the modem and router, or in the router like the older version. Obviously if it is connected in between then it grabs enough bandwidth for itself and leaves the remainder for the rest of the net.
