Unhappy Tethering on Froyo

So I was fortunate enough to get the Froyo update and I am enjoying it. With that said I need some clarification please, I searched the forum and couldn't find a direct answer to the following questions:

1. Wired Tethering is no longer free in Froyo? (Atleast I can't use wired tethering, I get a Data Call Failure.)(in 4g or 3g mode)(doh I don't have the sync software on my pc....dumb###)

2. Wireless Tethering has been nixed and is only available when someone builds an "unrevoked" for it. The other option is to pay 29.99 for a feature that is built into the phone(partial rant coming out there)?

Thanks,
MogulMan6800

1. Where are you seeing that it's not 'free' to tether via wired connection? I just did it, as a test, and it works fine - No mention of fee, etc..

2. Since day one it has been said that using your Evo as a hotspot is a $29.99 service feature. Again, not sure where you read/heard it was ever free. It's not nixed, it's still there (called Sprint Hotspot I believe), as it has been since the last update for me (the 35MB previous update, not the 22MB one). The additional fee, I'm sure, is because you are using your Evo to hook up to what, 6-8 wifi devices (PC's, game systems, whatever can wifi) and suck bandwidth...

***IMPORTANT UPDATE***
No joke.. I was really curious about this. So I contacted Sprint CS, spoke with Katy K. I asked her specifically what we were talking about - That I know using the Evo as a wireless hotspot is a $29.99 service, but can you use the usb tether option hooked up to one computer for free.. She wasn't sure, and had to ask (Which - I appreciate). She came back though, and told me what the previous poster stated. "In order to use usb wired tethering, you must have the $29.99 mobile hotspot service."

This - Is very disappointing. I can understand a fee on sharing with 6 of your buddies the phone's internet. I cannot understand being on vacation or business with my laptop and wanting to surf on it instead of my smaller screened Evo and having to pay the same fee. I mean, if I ever have to do that, I will literally go door to door and invite anyone I can onto my hotspot to get my money's worth (j/k of course, but isn't that just crazy)??

In response to the next post below this one.. Did you install the driver on your PC? I did - That's what made it work. I clarified that with the CS agent as well - As I did not want a $29.99 fee for trying something I thought was free - And complained that there was no mention of this, nor any 'warning' that you were entering a mega-fee zone, rofl..

Well, correct me if I am wrong but after the update last night I connected my phone to pc via usb and used pdanet and my phone connected so isn't that considered tethering?

The usb tethering we're referring to is when you plug your usb cord between the phone and the computer - You know the dialog box that comes up, says what do you want to do with your connection.. USB Drive, charge only, etc.. There is a new option, the bottom one, which says usb tether (I think, away from phone atm).. Froyo now supports usb tethering natively, but carriers have the option to charge additional for it, use it free as designed by Android, or hide it completely. Sprint, from what I was told by the CSR has chosen to charge, err, bundle it with the mobile hotspot package..

I've no idea how that will affect pdanet or any app/program which tethers, for what it's worth Proceed with caution I suppose

PDA Net still works. I'm guessing Easy Tether does as well.

Well, I hope that you will be able to continue to use it. I only got it (pdanet) to use in emergencies and when I travel which isn't often but nice to have when I do. Anyone else besides me and thekarens able to connect to pdanet without errors?

So PDAnet no longer works on the Evo with 2.2? How can this be? I just turned off wifi on my phone and laptop. I then fired enabled USB Debugging, launched PDAnet on my Evo, and connected on my laptop.

Here are my results. I have been running 2.2 since last night via OTA upgrade.

I guess we got off track here and with the confusion of the Froyo built in tethering mentioned it confused me anyway. I may have been the one to have confused everyone as I am the one who mentioned pdanet. I have never even tried to use the built-in tether because I was under the impression that you had to have the hotspot service for the builtin tether to work, correct or not? ( See, I told you I was confused *grin*)

Not true prior to 2.2, true now (that you have to have the hotspot service/feature to use usb tethering via froyo) - Stand-alone programs apparently still work from posts here and other forums..
