Purpose of having TEP

Hi everyone,

I just thought I would posit this question for fun discussion! I received the email for Open TEP enrollment today. I currently have a Samsung Intrepid. As everyone knows, it's 7 dollars a month and has $100 deductible for smartphones.

Assuming a used smartphone can be had for around 200-300 bucks, what is the purpose in getting TEP if say you lose your phone after one year and must shell out (100+ 7*12) $184 for a replacement phone?

I see that TEP can be advantageous if you lose your phone within a few months of having paid for TEP but as time goes on, it certainly doesn't seem worth it to me...

many factors,

the most obvious is if replacing your handset will cost far more than 300 to replace.
also it covers if the phone is damaged not just lost, sometimes w/o a deductible.

That said I personally don't carry tep I did at one point and now feel that the money is better spent in an as needed lump and not over time.

Thanks for chiming in---I just thought it'd be better if you pay it in one lump sum..especially if you are the "careful" type that tends not to lose his phone. Granted, the only problem is if it were physically stolen or broken.

It's the same question about adding collision and comprehensive coverage on an older car, where the premiums you pay and the deductible may be similar to what the vehicle is worth.

In the end, it depends on your ability to cover the $200-300 charge in the event of an issue. Some people may do better just paying for TEP every month and knowing that if they have an issue, any issue, the maximum charge they will face is $100. For others, it may be the peace of mind that repair work in store will be provided at no cost, saving $119-129 over the "out of warranty" cost for a repair. Obviously certain devices have warranty type issues, such as the TP and a keyboard failing.

If you can afford to cover a replacement, then TEP likely is not for you!
