Tutorial on How to use CDMA workshop to get MSL #

Hope this has not already been posted in any kind of detail and that it does not violate any sort of rules here, if so i apologize. I know it has been mentioned but i have not seen any kind of specific details provided so i figured i would do so.
O.k the following steps are what i did to get my own personal MSL number for my LG LOTUS. After several attempts trying to get it from Sprint with NO luck, i used this program and a little trial and error to get it myself.

PLEASE PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK and I ASSUME NO RESPONSIBLITY FOR ANY PROBLEMS THAT MAY ARISE, although i experienced no troubles at all. My phone turned off a couple of times, but with little headache at all i was able to get my number and TURN OFF the one-click carousel. Again this list of steps are for using the LG Lotus, and other phones may vary slightly.

Step 1. connect phone via your usb data cable (with your microSD card removed) to your computer, but DO NOT connect via mass storage mode, just connect cable to phone and to cpu

Step 2. next open cdma workshop (you can download from http://www.cdma-ware.com/workshop.html) and make sure you are on the MAIN tab, and click the button to upper right that says port. In the pop up window see which com port your phone is on, should be labeled Serial Port. Click ok to close this pop up and then select the proper com from the drop down box at the upper right portion of the MAIN tab under COM Settings (AT mode). ONce you've selected the right com, click the CONNECT button to the bottom of the CDMA workshop progam window.

Step 3. After clicking connect it should verify that a connection was made at the bottom of the CDMA workshop program. Now click the Read tab next to the connect/disconnect button (note, you're still on the Main tab). Now once you've clicked the READ button your phone information should pop up to the left of the cdma workshop screen.

Step 4. next, click on the security tab, and then click the drop down arrow under the SPC/User Lock at the bottom right of cdma workshop program, and select "LG method" from the list.

Step 5. once "LG method" is selected, just click the Read button and the number that pops up in the window is your 6-digit MSL unlock code that is needed to switch your phone's theme from the default one-click XUI to the LG UI that does NOT have the one-click carousel.

Step 6. next go back to the MAIN tab and click the disconnect button at the lower right and close the CDMA program.

Step 7. Now that you have your MSL code you can dial ##3282# on your phone and a menu will pop up on your screen. Select item number 9 from the list, labeled XUI.

Step 8. on the small pop up that pops up select option 2, edit.

Step 9. Now type in your newly discovered 6 digit MSL code, and wait for phone to bring you to next menu. To chage to the LG UI, select menu item 3, "THEME" from the menu and then select the "LG theme, item 2" from the next pop up window. Don't freak out, your Phone WILL RESTART and when it does it will display your new UI and the one-click interface and carousel will be gone.

NOTE: To switch back, just go thru steps number 7-9 again and this time select the XUI from the list instead. YourpPhone will again restart and you'll have your one-click interface back.

I hope this helps out those who are thinking of trying their Lotus without the one-click carousel, enjoy.

glad it worked, i was nervous posting this for fear it may not work for others and i would end up looking like an idiot.

I enjoyed the one-click carousel but it's much better without it, PLUS you now get 12 shortcuts to customize instead of the 5 on the carousel.

Hope these steps work for others as well....

Did not work for me.. once I clicked "Port:" box, it says "COM3 - HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP".

That is the only option. When I change it to COM3, it says "Failed.. Unable to open COM3 port". If I try other ports (1,2) it says "Failed.. COM1 port does not exist".

Your do have a Lotus right? Assuming yes, I believe you need to make sure you have installed the LG Modem driver. I cannot remember exactly but i'm almost sure i downloaded and installed this soon after i got my phone. Try downloading and installing this file http://download134.mediafire.com/yfx...er_Ver_4.1.exe, and then retry the tutorial.
The reason i think you need to install some drivers is that when i hooked my phone up and went to change COM ports my phone was listed in COM 4 or 5 and it specifically said LG something or another. I'd tell you exactly, but i am at work now and don't have my data cable, the CDMA program etc.

I think this should solve your problems, i hope.

why not just call sprint tech support and ask them for it, tell them you want to do a ##786# (##RTN#) reset and they will give it to you no problem.

You were right!

FYI: That link no longer worked.. after going through ~10 websites' redirects to the LG support page (which no longer hosts the CDMA modem file, at least from what I could find), I got it from here. Click the drop-down box on the right under PCSYNC Program, scroll to the bottom and select "USB Modem Driver".

Thanks!

Brett, thank you, this is good information to know, wish i would have know what to ask for back when i was trying to get my MSL number. I tried to get Sprint to give it to me several different times, over several different days and kept being told sorry, won't do it. I emphasized it was for trouble shooting reasons and they still said no. Only way they said they'd give it to me was if i paid my early termination fee to end my contract, then they said i could have it. I got sick of asking so i figured out how to get CDMA workshop to get it for me. So again thank you for posting what to ask for, it would make things easier. But for those "hand-on" folks this tutorial should work.

And took all of 20 seconds once I had the driver installed.

Your method worked perfectly. The initial problem is that there was no serial COM port, since I didn't have the LG USB Modem driver installed.

I suggest adding that to the tutorial to make sure nobody leaves that out.

As per GeorgeSmith, i have added additional information / new step, please see below.

O.k the following steps are what i did to get my own personal MSL number for my LG LOTUS. After several attempts trying to get it from Sprint with NO luck, i used this program and a little trial and error to get it myself.

My phone turned off a couple of times, but with little headache at all i was able to get my number and TURN OFF the one-click carousel. Again this list of steps are for using the LG Lotus, and other phones may vary slightly.

EDIT: PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE INSTALLED THE "LG CDMA MODEM DRIVER" PRIOR TO PROCEEDING.....THE LINK IS HERE AFTER INSTALLING THIS DRIVER/SOFTWARE, PROCEED WITH STEPS BELOW. It seems like an involved process but as GeorgeSmith has said above, only takes less than a minute or so. END OF EDIT.

Step 1. connect phone via your usb data cable (with your microSD card removed) to your computer, but DO NOT connect via mass storage mode, just connect cable to phone and to cpu

Step 2. next open cdma workshop (you can download from http://www.cdma-ware.com/workshop.html) and make sure you are on the MAIN tab, and click the button to upper right that says port.
