Whats a "BAD ESN"

See people selling a New Instinct with this label on Ebay.

What does this mean exactly?

Stolen, reported lost, or otherwise MIA. A synonym for shady.

More than likely is a stolen phone and cannot be re-activated on Sprint network. For example, it's pretty obvious that this one was stolen from someones car.

Every phone has an ESN (electronic serial number) which is used to register and identify it on a cellular network. When a phone is reported lost, stolen or damaged and a claim is made or if its account has an unpaid balance the phones ESN is flaged and can no longer be registered unless the flag is removed (which is another thread).

Not really, as long as the seller discloses that the esn is bad. Phones with bad esn's can be used for parts, demostration other purposes (but thats a different thread).

Here's his response...

Dear xxxxxxx,

I have no idea i bought it from someone low enough so i can make some money, i checked the esn number and sprint said the phone can not be activated, but if you know someone that works for sprint they might be able to do something, however i am just trying to make money!, its in new condition

people on different networks usually buy the bad esn phones.. such as cricket users. cricket will activate any esn. or you could be crafty and rewrite the esn on the instinct and activate it on sprint and pay less than normal. dont ask me how to do this :P

Yeah I can write a new ESN too... but that won't do any good if that ESN isn't registered with Sprint (which I believe they are)

Hey wait a minute that is my phone I wondered where it went

Some one call the police on that eBay member

In all seriousness just don't take a chance on a phone with a bad ESN
