Info & FAQ for New Sprint Touch Firmware Update

The purpose of this thread is to show people what comes with the new ROM, along with answer any frequently asked questions about how to get things similar to the way they were working (if possible).

There's also plenty of info available in this thread: http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=166460

Here's what's new (and some changes some have noticed):

- GPS!!! (with Live Search in ROM)
- Threaded SMS (thanks to Windows Mobile 6.1)
- EVDO Rev. A (faster upload speeds, slightly faster download speeds)
- New QWERTY keyboard in addition to the standard SureType keyboards
- Missed calls link on the homescreen actually goes to missed calls now, not call history
- No "Message Sent" indicator when you send a text message (can be changed in the registry)
- Clock seems to update faster when you turn on the screen
- Microsoft OneNote is part of the Office Suite
- Banner says "Sprint" instead of "Sprint PCS"
- New splash screen when turning the phone on
- On HTC Launcher, there are 2 icons for rotating the screen. You can rotate the screen either way
- New Communications Manager
- Automatic BT pairing with many headsets
- No option for phone to "Roam only"

I'm sure I may have missed a few, but this will be updated.

For a tried & true way to get everything working, follow this thread: http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/sho....php?p=1859251

Now for the FAQs:
Can I disable threaded text messaging?
Yes!
1. Using a registry editor, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Setting s\OEM\
2. Under the registry key, create a new DWORD value with value name as SMSInboxThreadingDisabled and set it value data to 1.

I heard there's an Opera brower built-in. I can't find it!
See http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=166519

My Sprint Navigation shortcut doesn't work!
See http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=166519

Is Sprint Navigation free?
It depends on your plan. If it's not included in your data plan, it's $3/day or $10/month.

How do I save my contacts, tasks, call logs, emails, text messages... etc.?
You can use the free utility called PIM Backup: http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/sho...7&postcount=25

How do I turn on the "message sent" notification?
Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Inbox\Settin gs\SMSNoSentMsg and in "Value data", enter 0.

How do I set the default browser back to Internet Explorer?
See http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/sho...8&postcount=17

I searched on Google which led me to several options that required a registry edit. I found this option on xda developers forum (link below). That installs a nice little cab that lets you switch back and forth between Threaded and Single (Traditional). It also gives you the ability to turn on the Sent SMS Notification...if you like that. Pretty nice little app that I would recommend if you don't want to use a registry editor.

That IS handy. Thanks.

some basic info on GPS functions/settings should be added to that main post. (Com port 4, baud rate 4800, using a primer app, etc.)

This Value is already there, you just need to change it from 1 to 0.

Update: Whoa there, just a word of warning -- Sprint has reached out to us to let us know that this is actually not an official update, and it "does not support unauthorized or beta software updates for its devices." xda-developers often does good work, but just be careful with this one and make sure you understand that Sprint won't be bailing you out if you get yourself up a creek with this one!

Does this mean that the 6.1 rev a that I downloaded and installed yesterday from this site was not a Sprint sanctioned update?

Ok thanks, I'll update the post. I couldn't remember if I created the value or if it was already there.

I haven't seen a need to enter those GPS settings anywhere. When have you had to use them?

From what I can gather online it's the official shipping one but it "leaked out" somewhere. It seems to be pretty official but it's not up on HTC's website anywhere.

I didn't see it anywhere on this thread but I thought I would make a couple of observations.

This update does indeed add Rev A. I can't figure out how to determine that you are using the Rev A network on the handset but speed tests both on the handset and tethering prove the update does bring Rev A.

The second feature is important to some people but not myself anymore as the Sprint native network is worlds better in my area to the point that I rarely need to roam or lock the phone to roaming. The phone update will remove the "roaming only" feature from the phone. Your only choices will be "automatic" or "Sprint only."

Everything works great but I almost bricked my phone. The phone lost the USB connection during the update so I had a blank phone. I could not go back to the old firmware as at that point it had been cleared from the phone and the new firmware was not yet installed. I traced the problem to a buggy Windows Mobile Device Center as I use Vista. Make sure you have a solid WMDC or Activesync connection with your phone as losing your USB connection will cause a panic and if bad enough will brick your phone.

Fix for Screen Rotation:

I was able to fix the screen rotation (portrait->landscape) that some people have complained about. The 6.1 update rotates to the (right-handed) Landscape view by default. I believe the default for 6.0 was (left-handed), at least that is what I always used before my upgrade.

Here is how I fixed it.

1. I have my side button performing my rotation when I want to move to landscape mode. You can change this through Start->Settings->Buttons. This is not necessary, but how I do it since I took my rotation option off my home screen. Which, by the way, the home screen had the option to rotate right or left I believe with the upgrade?

2. After I had made the button change I went to Start->Settings->System->Screen. I then selected Landscape (left-handed) which is how I was using landscape mode with the original ROM and I believe was the default with 6.0. After selecting your prefered landscape mode, hit OK. Make sure you leave it in your preferred landscape mode. I then used the button on the side of my Touch to toggle back and forth between Portrait and Landscape mode to make sure it rotated the direction that I wanted it to...and the settings stuck.

Hope that helps.

Is there a fix yet for the Calls screen defaulting to Missed Calls every time? I search all the relevant Touch 6.1 threads but only found posts asking the same thing.

Thanks

I think that's by design, as that icon is for missed calls, not call history.

I noticed that when i try to access "Sprint Nav" it asks for login info, which i do not have since it's not in my plan. But, when i use GoogleMaps or LiveSearch, the GPS function works for the apps. Am i going to be charged any fees while using gps function in either GoogleMaps or LiveSearch?

Also, i went to www.mobilespeedtest.com on my touch and got 462.20kbps rating! That is much faster than before 6.1.

You should not get charged for using GPS on your phone. And GoogleMaps and LiveSearch never charged for use in the past as long as you have a data plan. Sprint Navigation is a separate application that Sprint sells similar to having a Garmin or TomTom on your phone.

Thanks for the website to test speed. Love how consistent the network or my phone seems to be. The first time I tested I got 128 kbps...decent but not what I wanted. Second time 73 kbps??? Hiccup in the network or phone? Last time 399.5 kbps!!! That's what I want and hope for all the time!

With 6.1 you can only use "phone as a modem" $$$. Can not use "shared internet". With 6.0 you could shared internet..

Keep this in mind when before you decide to update.

This is not entirely true. With a relatively simple registry tweak you get what 6.0 had. There is a comprehensive thread on ppcgeeks.
