Talking New version of PDANet is out (2.0)

PDANet 2.0 is out with WM6 enhancements, including the ability to use the phone and data connection simultaneously. Upgrading from 1.80 only costs $19.

Timed nicely with the just-recently released *official* Sprint Touch Rev.A+GPS firmware update.

So pardon me for being stupid but what does PDAnet get you that you can't do with the built in Ineternet sharing program? I use it regularly tethered to my laptop and it works great. I'm just curious as to what spending the extra $19 will get me. I'm not opposed to spending money on solutions... but can't see why if there is a free alternative that works.

First off, the program is $36. It is $19 if you purchased the previous version.

Secondly, its easier to use. One click on your desktop and its all connected. With the phone's ICS, you have to use the phone to establish its own internet connection, then go to the PC and share it. PDAnet makes it simpler, and its 100% sure not to get you charged (some people have said their ICS has reverted automatically from time to time from "Sprint PCS" back to "Phone as Modem". If Sprint catches you using Phone as Modem, they could charge you.) PDANet doesn't use Phone as modem or ICS. It is its very own separate dialup networking application that is running on your phone, so as far as Sprint sees it, it is just like any internet application you install to your phone.

You will be able to with unlimited data. I don't know if I can post the link here, but search google for "June Fabrics", that is the company's name.

I wasn't aware of that. However, it should still work with Bluetooth or Wifi, since these things don't require the PC-side of pdanet.

Because May Fabrics was already taken?

Maybe they started out as selling fabrics. Who knows? Seem like an illogical jump to go from clothing to software?

What about Tandy, which is a leather company (Tandy Leather). They became Radio Shack Corporation. Leather to computers/electronics is a bit of a stretch too.

Ahhh, ok. So here's something interesting. I've updated to the latest ROM which gives me WM6.1, Rev. A, and GPS. The one thing that was noticed and corrected pretty quickly was that ICS no longer worked (error 67 problems). A registry hack to remove a reference to a DLL file call was made and it works like a champ, but I've also noticed that being able to select PAM is not longer an option in the connections setting tab. Only SprintPCS is there. Using ICS will automatically choose PAM for you and I've yet to find anything to prevent that. However... I've never seen any additional billing from Sprint from my past usage and I've used it for quite a while. Mainly when I'm not near a hotspot and am meeting with clients to show them some of my online slideshows.

Whatever works is good.

I originally bought PDAnet when I had a Treo 700wx (With WM5 and no ICS). Verizon wanted $20/month to tether, so at $36, PDAnet paid for itself in 2 months. Even though I'm on Sprint with a phone that has ICS, I still paid $19 more to upgrade to 2.0. I just like the software.

You can always just try it out if you want to. It will install as a trial for a period of time.

So is it official that Rev A supports simultaneous voice/data? Maybe I'm out of the loop, but I thought there was some debate a while back on whether or not it truly allowed for that. Doing some very unofficial testing myself a few minutes ago, I'm unable to do anything data related while on a phone call. (not using PDANet, just in general) I'm fairly certain that I'm in a Rev A location too...

Sort of... here's what June Fabrics says:

Version 2.0 has some significant improvement for Windows Mobile 6.0 phones. In particular, it adds the Proxy Mode feature that allows the phone's radio/modem to be shared by the phone and the computer at the same time. This improves the stability of the PdaNet connection and also allow the phone to be used for voice calls without having to drop the PdaNet connection.

Ok.. I've installed it on my phone and laptop and have tried it out. Seems to work pretty slick. Though I never really found the old way that much of a hassle. Two finger flicks and a softkey button push and I'm all connected... but PDAnet does allow me to automatically connect when I connect the phone so that's cool. The speed difference is non-exsistant(both methods have the same rate despite the PDAmodem showing 2.4Mbps and the other at 10Mbps... bottleneck is still the network), though BT is marginally slower than USB. I could never actually get BT tethering to work so I always used my USB cable anyway. The biggest thing though is that I'm able once again to use the sprintpcs connection rather than the PAM connection. In theory this will prevent Sprint from hammering me with extra fees or charges. Though I've never seen any additional charges before. I'll use it for a while and see if it's something I can't live without.

For all the mogul owners out there, they have the option of using the wifi, but yes, for us Touch owners, its USB or bluetooth only...

There isn't much hope in adding wifi to the Touch. The company that makes the wifi SD cards (Spectec) has been dragging its feet on a wireless G micro-sd card. And to make matters worse, the poor design of the Touch's micro SD port (in particular the inaccessibility and the cover over it) will make the final product impractical anyway. Those wifi cards tend to stick out, for the internal antenna.

Ok, so based on the wording it isn't simultaneous voice/data (how could it be if the carrier technology doesn't allow for it) it just doesn't disconnect you if a call comes in? (or allows you to make a call w/o disconnecting)
