Instinct as a modem drivers help
Ok i know that people claim you cant use the instinct as a modem with the data cable included. well i found out yesterday that if you plug it into your computer itll go to the " phone off connected to pc " screen. well if i put my laptop to sleep then wake it back up i can use the phone and under device manager there is a question mark in the USB tree called Samsung cdma modem. somthing similar to that but there is a yellow exclamation next to it because i dont have drivers for it. anyways..... does anyone know where i can find drivers for this phone as a modem because i love using that feature i used it on my a900 all the time.

That bit about connecting for a few seconds then dropping is because in the phone, the Modem NAI option is set. I ran into this years ago with my A900, and got billed for every connection attempt. The A900 has a way to turn this setting off. Unfortunately nobody has found it yet for the Instinct, and I'm beginning to suspect nobody will. It's a violation of the usage agreement anyway and I'm amazed as many Sprint phones allow it as they do. Having said that though, it was handy for occasional use and I miss it.

There are 2 modes when you connect the USB cable to PC....Mass Storage and Modem
If you remove the SD card, you get the modem mode. Mass Storage is same as a flash stick to move content to you card and use on device. Even if you can do this, your account needs to be enabled for this usage so that you authenticate with the billing system. |

iv connected using my a900 with nai modem on befor i turned it off to play it safe but it worked what if i enter the user name and password could i get on then. i was talking to a SMART sprint rep he said lots of credtible stuff he definetly wasent stupid like the rest anyways. he says the nai username and password is saved on the phone but if you dont have it when you try to connect sprint wont let you because you dont have it. so if i do know it and enter it for dial up would it work? also i need the MSL to get to the password i hear but i dont have it yet and you cant add phone as a modem to your everthing plan the same guy told me its not because there being mean he says when you ad that to the plan the system would have a glitch causing premium tv and radio to not work so they decided to drop that off because for the sake of the " everthing " plan that was the way to go. damn this pisses me off

It works. Too bad I'm afraid of the $700 usage bill to try.

Umm I thought all you had to do to do PAM is this
##debugmenu# Enter ur MSL Goto Toggle NAI Put Toggle Modem Off Then make sure you have downloaded Sprints Media Manager (for driver purposes only) Add a new connection (Dial up).. The dial up number would be #777 and Pass and User name Blank this is working for me and i have no problems so far .....the speed on it is really good ..wow ..... |

OK, after some experimentation I finally figured out EXACTLY how use the Samsung Instinct as a modem.
1. Obtain your MSL number by dialing *2 on your phone. Follow the menus until you get to the "All other tech support questions" section so you can talk to a customer service rep. Simply ask them for the MSL number for your phone. Most of them will approve, some will be ****s and deny you the number. But it is YOUR code to YOUR phone that YOU own. It was once the property of Samsung, and now it is YOURS, so Sprint can't deny you the number. 2. Now go to the dialer again, and enter ##debugmenu# and then enter your MSL number to access the secret programming menu. Go to the bottom and select Toggle NAI, and set it to the OFF position. 3. Now go back to the dialer and put in ##USB# and it should say Default to MDM which stands for Modem Mode. If it says MSC, then push the back arrow and the code again. Once it says MDM, take the battery out of the phone. Then when you turn it back on, it should stay in MDM mode everytime until you change it back to MSC. You need to change it back if you want to access your files. 4. Now plug the phone into the USB port on your computer and go to the Start menu, and RIGHT click on My Computer and select Properties. Then select the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button. Scroll down until you see a little yellow icon with SAMSUNG CDMD next to it. 5. Double click the Samsung and then it will ask you to insert the CD for the device drivers. Once you put in the CD, it will install drivers that it did not install the first time. This is because these drivers are specifically for the modem, and Sprint doesn't want you using the modem feature, but apparently Samsung does, so they include the driver right there on the installation CD for ya! It will install about 3 or 4 drivers. When you get done with one, it will prompt you to insert the CD again because another new device has been found. These other drivers are the USB port controllers. Just leave the CD in, and keep hitting the NEXT button until all drivers are installed. 6. Now that the driver for the modem is installed, you will see in the device manager list that your Samsung modem is now in the modem's section of the list. 7. Go to the Start menu again, and select the control panel, then go to Network and Internet Connections. Then select the first thing on the menu which is "Set up or change your Internet Connection". 8. Click the Add button, then select Dial up to private network. You will see your normal modem if you have on installed in your computer, but then you will also see your Samsung modem! So select it, and make sure to de-select your normal modem. 9. In the next screen put #777 for the dial number, and leave the user name and password fields blank. 10. Now that everything is set up and ready to go, just open the start menu again, and click "Connect To", and select whatever you named your Samsung connection. I named mine simply "Mobile". 11. Now open Internet Explorer, or Firefox, or MSN, or whatever, and it will be connected to the internet! On your phone you will see the program window for the connection, and the red button at the bottom you can slide to the right to end the call. WOW! But I noticed when I'm idle on the computer, the phone shows the connection has ended, then I open a new webpage, and the connection restarts at zero seconds again. Does this mean it keep reconnecting and I'm gonna get the $700 charge that person was talking about? I hope not! I don't need to use the phone for internet access right now, but I'm thinking it would be nice to use my laptop and get on the net wherever I want! |
