Retirement

Hello everyone,

I would like to take this moment to thank everyone for their Avatar Requests.

When I started helping out and creating avatars for users in June of 2006 I did it both to help out the Sprint Users community but also because I needed a creative outlet. I hadn't worked on small images (most of my previous work was designed for print (comparing a 200Mb file to avatars under 100kb)) and had never made animated images. So I helped out and enjoyed it.

Over the course of a few months I was rewarded with the Avatar Guy title and badge. I appreciated this and stepped up my efforts so that I could continue to deserve my Avatar Guy status.

Now almost 2 years later I have created over 500 avatars for over 100 users. My creative curiosity has been more than sated. In my opinion I haven't created a 'new' avatar for many months. I find myself now going to Google images and finding a suitable image and cropping it to the right size. Add a little text, add an 'effect' to the text, and maybe throw a logo in and voila.... I have an avatar that I have created dozens of times.

Beyond that I no longer get any enjoyment out of creating Avatars. I now avoid the avatar shop (and sometimes Sprint Users all together) just to not see new requests. When I do finally go to the avatar shop I feel more obligated to fulfill requests. I do them quick and dirty with no real thought of making a good one. If it meets the requested criteria (sometimes very vague criteria) then I call it good enough.

So from here on out, I am retiring my Avatar Guy badge (it shouldn't be a problem as I haven't had the badge on my profile or name for some time... I don't know why). I may occasionally drop by, and may even make an avatar or two, but I will no longer avoid Sprint Users, just because I don't want to make Avatars.

If there are any Moderators reading this, please remove the Avatar Guy status from my profile.

Thank you again for all the requests... I hope you enjoyed Avatars.

CCalvinN

Good job indeed. I certainly understand where you are coming from and thank you for your work here at SU. You will however need to contact an admin to have your badge removed as mods do not have access to that.

Thanks so much for the avatars, Calvin. It has made SprintUsers stand out a great deal in the world of internet forums.

Just a suggestion....

You may want to "sticky" this thread so that people know you have retired. I see there are still some avatar requests being posted.

I never had the pleasure of recieving an avatar from you, however you work is amazing. I do hope you continue to grace us with your presence and words and that your creative flow will manifest itself in another way.

I hear that babysitting twin boys makes creative juices flow. I have a set if you need to get back on the horse....rofl

I have seen a lot of your work here on SU, and I must say, you are a true artist. I understand your decision, and hope you find something to get those creative juices flowing for you again.

Thanks for my avatar - if you had not made me one - I would still be avatar-less. You do fantastic work but you should not feel "obligated" to make them. Thank you again for your contributions.
