WM 6.1 Available Now!!!

A co-worker who also owns a Q9c said that when he talked to Sprint on the phone last night they said he could stop by a Sprint store and have the WM 6.1 update installed to his phone.

Has anyone else heard about this?

Microsoft's website says Windows Mobile 6.1 is ready but not ready for download.

Check out the video.

I have contacted both Sprint and they told me to contact Motorola and than I contacted Motorola and they told me to contact Sprint. Right now I don't think either one knows what is going on. I than emailed the chick who wrote the press release about 6.1 and she responded that yes it will be released, more than likely it will be released from Motorola's web site and not until summer time.

As a Microsoft employee, I will tell you that Sprint will be our point of contact for this.
Due to a whole series of things I can't exactly talk about, the carrier is who will be distributing the OS for their phones, when the time comes.
The internal chatter has me thinking that Summer is about the right time to be looking for the release.
If it makes you feel any better, I can't get it and I know the guys who distribute it! We're under contract with the carriers to never release software for their phones.
Arg... So close.....

I actually talked to sprint's advance tech support last night on this issue and they said that it will be available via sprints upgrade page in the 3rd quarter ie: july august sept. for free...

The sprint guy said that if you try to download it from Microsoft it will mess your moto q 9c up because the phone has a scaled to sprint version of wm6

The rep doesn't know what he is talking about. First off, you can not and will not be able to download a generic version of WM 6.1, it doesn't exist. Next, if MS puts download links on their site, it will just be a link to the official download from Sprint/Moto. Either way, there will only be 1 upgrade for the Q9c release when Sprint has completed its testing.

Actually, you're quite mistaken. The "generic" version does exist. We've been flashing phones with it for a year, but it's used as a core for testing only. It's a functional OS, in the sense that DOS was.
Sprint, Verizon, AT&T and others add their own apps, settings and personalization to the custom releases, and really, that's the one you want.
There will actually be a release for each carrier, not for the Q9C as such. So Verizon will have a different update than we Sprint users will.
The base WM6.1 doesn't have anything special other than a more stable core.
Microsoft cannot distribute any OS for a carrier's phone, by contractual agreement so you will never be able to obtain one from us.
You are correct about the links, to an extent however. There are already Q9C links on the Windows Mobile site, but they point to the Motorola update page.

We are saying the exact same thing. I am not referring to any version of the OS that is being used for internal testing. I am referring to a "generic" release to the public such was suggested earlier in this thread and this is something that MS will not provide for any device ouside of the internal test audiance. MS will point to each carrier upgrade location, in this case the Moto site.

Sprint's CITA press release indicated "Summer 2008". Before we get ahead of ourselves, it is not technically even summer yet, as summer begins on June 21st. Summer is also several months long, so that leaves a pretty sizable window for Sprint/Microsoft/Motorola to get their act together.

Patience, friend.

Has anyone checked the moto site lately? There is now an installer for Sprint / Moto Q9C -- but since I don't have one I cannot tell WHAT this installs.

I do know when I checked a few days ago that Q9C was not listed as an option.

Can anyone verify if this is a WM 6.1 UG?

Looks like the Q9c update has been released. Just follow the directions on the Moto website. I have not confirmed personally but from this thread at everythingq, it does look legit.
