Call customer care, and make sure that the phone is cleared from your account, and you don't owe anything if you closed the account. As long as they say it's good to go, you should be fine.

Was the phone yours? If it is yours, the ESN should be clear. Call up Sprint and tell them you want to verify if the ESN is clear. Or if you are in the new billing system, check through there. Just do the first step on if are going to check it through sprint.com.

Thank you folks for the quick replies.

I am a current customer (new as of 12.3.07) and I am thinking of buying a Touch on Ebay... and sell my Centro.

My Centro is within the 30 day exchange.... But I have already done 3 exchanges and really do not what to do a 4th.

I am seeing the HTC Touch on ebay for $280 New in Box (+ $20 shipping = $300) and if I do get a Touch through Sprint I pay $349 + tax $40 = $389 then I send and wait for a $100 rebate.....

I do however have to wonder how they (ebay) sells phones for less.... I have asked if they were referbs/factory seconds and the sellers say no... they are brand new.... something also strange.... almost all the "htc touch" sellers are in Florida

Make sure it's not a company, and you're not required to sign a contract for service when you're ordering the phone....

also may I recommend if you are going to call sprint to verify the ESN do at least a best of 3. I was just givin a Palm 755 which turned out to be a locked ESN. I was a little ticked as most would be and told the person who gave it to me that phone was coded as stolen. Hee quickly denied it and said he would fix it. He then fell off the face of the planet. A few days later I had an ounce of hope and call sprint. They said it was no longer locked! But me being me, I called back, next rep said it was locked. I called again and was told it was fine, then the next two said it was still locked. I finally took it to a store and asked a rep in person who confirmed it was indeed locked and coded as stolen still. Just thought I would put that out there. A lot of the reps dont speak English very well and dont seem to care about actually answering questions or helping people. I wouldnt want you to get the wrong answer and then buy a faulty phone.

Yeah if it's your phone and you're not in collections with Sprint you ESN should be clear.

Good advice when calling Sprint always call back again and get another rep's opinion.

if you're in ensemble or have access to an account online just check it there. go to the "Activate phone" part and put in the ESN as if you were going to swap. then on the next menu it will either give you an error message or be fine and look like a normal swap. then just click cancel. there's no guessing or calling 6 times - its either good or bad.

Both of the two numbers you see listed on the phone underneath the battery are esn #s.

To be clear, the two ESN numbers are the same. One is listed in decimal format, while the other is listed in hexidecimal format.

You are going to want to edit your post, because you never want to post your ESN online for everyone to see. Someone can try to activate the ESN that you posted and attempt to file an insurance claim against it, so they get an upgrade for 100 bucks.
