The Windows Mobile Registry Tweaks Thread

we dont have a centralized thread for registry tweaks, so i figure it would be somewhat nice to get one centralized thread

DISCLAMER: if you dont know what a registry tweak is dont try this you can mess up your device and end up needing to hard reset if you make a mistake so be careful, this is all at your own risk!

YOU WILL NEED a registry editor, i myself use phm registry edtior its free basic and does the job it can be found at http://www.phm.lu/products/

now onto the tweaks, this is a copy from http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=11156 to get us started, feel free to add more and we can keep this going, these tweeks apply to the touch, mogul, and 6700 running wm6 and in most/some cases wm5 devices as well, these DO not apply to the Q or Q9c but feel free to add some to the thread

1-Unlock Phone (certificate security disabled) rev.1 (6800 only)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies\0000 1001 = 2
-> Change the value data from 2 to 1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies\0000 1005 = 16
-> Change the value data from 16 to 40
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies\0000 1017 = 128
-> Change the value data from 128 to 144
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Security\Policies\Policies
-> Add new value "0000101b": Dword = 1
Close registry editor and soft reboot.

------------------------------------------------

2-Change Bluetooth headphones from mono (default) to stereo:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Bluetooth\A2 DP\Settings
UseJointStereo: change the DWORD from “1” TO “0” no quotes.
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\A2DP\Settings\Bi tPool to 50
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\A2DP\Settings\Ma xSupportedBitPool to 50,

------------------------------------------------

3-Today screen, Single line date

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\TODAY
"Date"=dword:1
"AutoSingleLineDatePlugin"=dword:1

------------------------------------------------

4-Change Operator name (make sure and remove the HTC CM gaurdian shortcut in the /windows/startup folder, otherwise this will default to sprint on soft-reset)

HKLM\System\State\Phone\Current Operator Name

------------------------------------------------

5-Disable the pop-up notification that says Message Sent rev.1

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Inbox
create a new key "Settings"
create a new string value "SMSNoSentMsg" and set the value to 1
Hit ok and select "Ok" to save and you are in business.

------------------------------------------------

6-Speed up

Using a registry editor such as PHM RegEdit lookup and change the following three values:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS\Cac heSize=0x1000(4096)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS\Ena bleCache=0x1(1)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Filters\f sreplxfilt\ReplStoreCacheSize=0x1000(4096)

-------------------------------------------------

8-Enable Bluetooth and IrDA in Wmodem

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\WModem
"Hide IrDA"=dword:00000000
"Hide Bluetooth"=dword:00000000
"Hide USB"=dword:00000000

-------------------------------------------------

9-Registry Hack Improvement of using bluetooth listen music

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\BtA2dpSnd
Add "Priority256 "= dword:60 (Use Dword Value)

HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Bluetooth/AudioGateway/Capability
(Dword:69)(Default is 37)

HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Bluetooth/AD2P/Settings/BitPool
(Dword: 60)(Default is 30)

-------------------------------------------------

10-Unlocking/Locking Items into position on today screen

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items\"Plugin you want to lock or Unlock"
change TYPE from 5 to 4

5=locked
4=unlock

-------------------------------------------------

11-Camera Flip Pictures Fix

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\Camera\Image

Change "EnableEncodePortrait" to 0

When you take a picture it is saved in the wrong configuration and you then have to rotate
it with a picture editor so its not sideways and save it again. This is the fix for it.

-------------------------------------------------

12-Disable Multi-NAI
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\WModem\Multi-NAI default is 1, set to 0(00000000)

-------------------------------------------------

13-Put Date in Title Bar

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell]
"ShowTitleBarClock"=dword:00000001
"TBOpt"=dword:00000003
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\nls\overrides]
"SSDte"="M/d/yy "

***** 2 spaces needed aafter the yy ****

fyi no quotes on the sting values if using a reg edit.

--------------------------------------------------

15-Change Vibrate Strength (6800 only)

HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\VIB

STRENGTH_LOW set to 1.

--------------------------------------------------

16-Disable Ambient Light Sensor (6800 only)

KEY_CURRENT_USER\CONTROL PANEL\BACKLIGHT set auto sensor from 1 to 0

--------------------------------------------------

17-how to get rid of some of thoes annoying sounds while on calls or making calls (or attempting), such as adjusting the volume,

go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds

Loudestincallvolume = the sound it makes when you turn the volume all the way up (that annoying little useless sound) delete this key to remove that

Quietestincallvolume = the same but for when you turn it all the way down

Networkdrop = the dropped call /w lost signal sound

Calldrop = caller hangs up before you do sound

---------------------------------------------------

18-Change ringtone/vibrate/LED flash characteristics

If you would like more control over how your device rings/vibrates/flashes its LEDs on events, you can can change the Script values of these events. For example, for an incoming call performing 'activate device, play ringtone, wait 3 seconds, repeat':

HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0\Script = "apw3r" (REG_SZ string, no quotes)

For performing 'active device, set volume to 33%, play ringtone, set volume to 67%, play ringtone, set volume to 100%, play ringtone (no repeat)':

HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0\Script = "ac33pc67pc100p" (REG_SZ string, no quotes)

The following are the full codes available to you. Please note that all the codes are executed simultaneously except after a ringtone play / wait code. E.g. 'v1p' will vibrate and play at the same time, while vibrating for 1 second. But 'pv1' will play the ringtone through all the way first, then start vibrating for 1 second.

a = activate device
cN = set volume to N in percentage max volume
fN = flash notification LED for N seconds
p = play ringtone. Note that this will play the ringtone all the way through before continuing with the next code.
r = repeat. Note that this should be the last code in your Script string, if used at all.
vN = vibrate for N seconds
wN = wait for N seconds. Note that the device will wait this long before continuing with the next code.

NOTE: I tried this on my 6800 and changed the v0 to v1 and now it doesn't have just one long vibrate. v0 sets it to vibrate always.

-----------------------------------------------------

19-FIX THE SLOW RINGER

To do this, you will need your MSL, which only Sprint (or your provider) can provide you. Open up the phone app and dial ##778# (PST). You will be asked to enter your MSL. Enter it, and you will be brought into the provisioning of your phone. From the top left, select Modem Settings. On this page, your Slot Cycle Index (SCI) is how often your phone polls the tower for incoming calls, etc. This value is 1.28 seconds multiplied by 2^value (i.e 0=1.28 secs, 1=2.56secs) with 0 fastest, 7 slowest. The default is 2, but lowering it to 1 hasn't noticeably affected my battery life, and roughly 2.5 second (SCI 1) response time is far more reasonable than roughly 5 seconds (SCI 2)

-----------------------------------------------------

20-Change scroll bar size

Navigate to HKey_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\GWE\ and tweak the following values.
cyHScr : Horizontal Scrollbars Height in pixels (default is 13)
cxVScr : Vertical Scrollbars Width in pixels (default is 13)

-----------------------------------------------------

21-Save Attachments or the Whole Email on your SD Card (NOT RECCOMENDED ON THE TOUCH!!!)

The Key in WM6 changed from WM5. In WM6 it is:

HKLM\System\Inbox\Settings

For Attachments add "AttachPath" value="\Storage Card\Inbox\Attachments" datatype="string"

For the rest of the email add "PropertyPath" value="\Storage Card\Inbox" datatype="string"

For the paths above to work, you need to have the Inbox folder and Attachments subfolder created already. You must reboot for them to take effect.

-------------------------------------------------------

22-add the AM/PM to your time in the title bar
To Add AM or PM
1) Open your registry editor (either PHM Registry Editor or Resco Explorer 2003).
2) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\nls\overrides
3) Create 1st String Value: Name = S1159 & String = Am
4) Create 2nd String Value: Name = S2359 & String = Pm
5) Create 3rd String Value: Name = STFmt & String = hh:mm t'M'
6) Soft-reset

There has to be a space after the am or pm otherwise it will not display
Also
am=aM pm=pM
Am=AM Pm=PM

--------------------------------------------------------

23-Changing SoftKeys
Create the following keys and Strings in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\11 2
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\11 3
112 is the left key and 113 is the right.
Set Default to what you want the key to read (ie. SMS)
Now for each key create a new string named Open and set the target path.

--------------------------------------------------------

with that said, lets try to centralize the registry tweaks its way too hard to find them across the forum!

and please, if at all possible give credit where credit is due!

ran out of room so here is

24-This edit allows you to see the duration of your Vision connection along with a button to disconnect it.

You see it in the bubble that is displayed when you tap the Vision icon.

Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Click ControlPanel
Click Phone
[at this point, the buttom grey status bar should read \HKLM\ControlPanel\Phone'
Click the bottom menu 'edit'
Select new dword value
Change the value name to "Flags2" (no quotes).
Select the 'hexidecimal' button.
Type 10
Click ok.
You should now see in the 'name/data' section:
Flags2 16 (0x00010)

When done, reset the device.

This is for the Moto Q (some apply to the Q9c) copied from Yong, moderator over at HelloMotoQ, so thank him not me! (in the words of malatesta over at ppcgeeks.com)

The following is a list of mods/hacks that you will find thereafter:
1. Making the scrollbars smaller (Vert. and Horz.)
2. Moto Q Speed Increases
3. Changing System Startup Sound
4. Turn off Shutter Sound for Camera
5. Change Start Menu into List Instead of Grid
6. Shut Off the Beep that Occurs When You Initiate a Call
7. Page Up and Page Down in IE
8. Change VZW Image that is Above the # Dial Window
9. Change Startup Microsoft Splash Screen
10. Remove Sent Message Popup With SMS.
11. Increasing Call History

1. Making the scrollbars smaller (Vert. and Horz.)

This hack allows 4 icons on a row in the start menu instead of 3 and allows more to be viewed on the screen in IE:

? Go to: HKey_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\GWE\
? Adjust the following values
cyHScr : Horizontal Scrollbars
Height in pixels (default is 6, set it to 3)
cxVScr : Vertical Scrollbars
Width in pixels (default is 6, set it to 3)
? Soft-reset

2. Moto Q Speed Increases (the Q9c has the glyphcache set to 65000 by default which is plenty)

The following 3 hacks increase system performance and makes the Q more responsive:

? Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE\
Changed limit from 16384 to 32768
? Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS
Changed - CacheSize to 4096

Navigate to: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\StorageManager\Filters\f sreplxfilt]
Change “ReplStoreCacheSize” dword decimal value to 4096 or 8192 (NEW! 2/21)

3. Changing System Startup Sound

? Navigate to: \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds
- At the very bottom of the list of entries, there an entry called AllSounds
- Open that up and you'll see a list of mp3 files.
- All you have to do is append your own audio files (mp3, wma, or wav) to the list. Then you have to make sure that you place your new audio clips in the \Windows folder so that they are accessible.
- The next time you go to the sounds events page, the drop down menu will contain the new clips you added.
? If you want to change the system startup sound, go to:
\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\SystemStart \Sound
- Change the hidden wav file, \Windows\Piano.wav to \Windows\MY_WAV_GOES_HERE.wav
- I'd be really cautious about changing the startup wav. You don't want the phone to lock if the audio file doesn't load. I converted my wav to 16bit, stereo, 22khz WAV file. I didn't use mp3 or WMA. This seems to work fine.

4. Turn off Shutter Sound for Camera (works great on q9c)

? Navigate to:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Pictures\Camera\OEM\Sou ndFile
? In the SoundFile key:
Modify the string/value \windows\shuttersound_02_secs.wav to say \windows\*none*
- Yes it should have the ** around none

5. Change Start Menu into List Instead of Grid (the Q9c includes an option to change this without the need to mess with the registry)

? Navigate to:
\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shell\StartM enu
? Change the GridView value to 0 if you want list view.
? Change it to 1 if you want grid view.

6. Shut Off the Beep that Occurs When You Initiate a Call

? Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\InC all2
? Change String/Value InitVol to 0

7. Page Up and Page Down in IE

Key mapping for "Page Up" and "Page Down" in Internet Explorer

? Open your favorite registry editor then navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
? Create a new key 'KeyMaps' (without the quotes)
? Under KeyMaps, create 2 new DWORD values:
50 with a value data 1 (this will make key "2" Page Up)
56 with a value data 2 (this will make key "8" Page Down)
- I created 2 more DWORD values:
52 with a value date 5 (this will make key "4" Page Left)
54 with a value date 6 (this will make key "6" Page Right)
The key name is the keycode you want. 50 = Key 2, 56 = Key 8, 52 = Key4, and 54 = Key
? Other DWORD values available are:
1 - Page Up
2 - Page Down
3 - Top
4 - Bottom
5 - Left
6 - Page Rignt
7 - Horizontal Top
8 - Horizontal Down
9 - Default Layout
10 - Desktop Layout
11 - One Column Layout
12 - Full Screen Toggle
13 - Show Pictures Toggle
Keycodes Values for 0-9: 48='0', 49='1', 50='2', 51='3', 52='4', 53='5', 54='6', 55='7', 56='8', 57='9'.
? Exit registry editor once you have mapped it to your favorite keys.

8. Change VZW Image that is Above the # Dial Window

When you go to dial a # you will see a Verizon Wireless Image above that #.

To get rid of this or to change it...

? Upload the desired image to /windows.
The default VZW image is 240x27. However the author, tonyxcom, says: "Oh, and you can pretty much make the image any size you want. I made mine 320. If you make it any less wide, it will get stretched."
? Navigate to:
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Shell/Rai/:MSCdial/
Click on the String/Value BannerImage
You will see in the String: /windows/16_brick_131.gif
Type in the string field: /windows/YourImagesName.jpg
YourImagesName.jpg being the name of the file you put in the /windows folder in Step 1.

Someone named Ben Hirashima has an auto installing CAB file for this hack. It can be downloaded at:
http://benhirashima.com/hostedFiles/DialPad.CAB

9. Change Startup Microsoft Splash Screen

The file that we are dealing with is "ms_screen.png". The system uses this file for both the startup and shutdown screens. There are 2 ways to do this mod. The first is to create another image file named ms_screen.png, and move it into your windows directory. Of course it will need to be 320x240, and I would save in PNG format just to be safe. Be sure to make a backup of the original just in case you happen to botch something.
The method that I chose was to create a PNG file, again 320x240, and save it under a different filename. Then, move this file into the Windows directory. Now it's time to edit the registry to point to this new file.

The registy keys are located at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Splash Screen
We are interested in the CarrierBitmap, MSBitmap, and MSShutdownBitmap keys. They point to the \Windows\ms_screen.png file by default. Change all 3 to the new filename, and restart the Q. You should see your new startup logo after the Verizon logo and animations, prior to your Home screen coming up.

10. Remove Sent Message Popup With SMS.

? Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Inbox
? Next, click on Inbox (make sure the Inbox is highlighted) and select Edit, New Key
? Name the New Key as "Settings"
? Click on "Settings" (make sure the Settings is highlighted) and select Edit, New String Value
? On "Value name:", key in SMSNoSentMsg and in "Value data", key in 1
? Soft reset your device and test it with one SMS, and you will notice that the SMS Sent bubble is being disabled

11. Increasing Call History

? Navigate to: \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Phone
"CallHistoryMax" contains the number of numbers that will be kept in history. [ie. change it to 100]

[Here is one that I didn?t venture to try: ]

USB Native Tethering, Make DUN Settings Stick

? To make the DUN setting (##342587) stick, do the following delete the following string value: HKey_Local_Machine\init\"Launch99"
? Exit regedit, dial in ##342587. Select OK, then Exit.
? Reset your Q.
Upon restart, the Modem Link app will be there indefinitely, lest you do the ##342587 again and disable it.
NOTE: Unless you take certain measures your phone can lock up 80% of the time.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

this is from treocrentral

Page UP/Down in Pocket IE

**Note: This is only really useful if you use the 'one column' view in PIE, if you usually scroll horizontally you have to assign the page up/down keys to something other than right or left on the 5 way**

Anyway, here goes:

-First, close out of Pocket IE if you already have it open
-Then Using a wm5 registry editor (I used resco regedit): go to -
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\
- Create a new key. Call it "KeyMaps" (without quotes)
- Under the newly created "KeyMaps" create a DWORD Value. Name it "37" and give it a DWORD data value of "1" (without quotes)
- Under the newly created "KeyMaps" create a DWORD Value. Name it "39" and give it a DWORD data value of "2" (without quotes)

Now go back in PIE

Left of the 5-way will page up
Right on the 5-way will page down

teckie99 @ ppcgeeks (for the touch)

Show a colored battery gauge on bottom right

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services\Power

set "ShowIcon" to 1

(Touch)
How to get rid of the DCIM folder and have pictures stored to your storage card under \Storage Card\My Documents\My Pictures:

1. Open up the camera, and press on the 3 bars on the lower right. That should open up the options. The last option will let you pick either main memory, storage card, and bluetooth. hChoose Storage Card and it ok to save. Pictures seemed to be save under \storage card\dcim\100media.

2. To change the path of the saved pictures and video to \Storage Card\My Documents\My Pictures, edit the registry:
HKLM\software\htc\camera\General
- change EnableDCIM from 1 to 0.

Now your pictures will be stored in \Storage Card\My Documents\My Pictures

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>HTC>Biotouch>Biotouch> LeftRightFPS
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>HTC>Biotouch>Biotouch> UpFPS

raise the numbers, i have mine personally set @ 60

----------------------------------------------------------

(touch)
Disable DCIM folder from the registry:
HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\General
DWORD Value: EnableDCIM
DWORD Data: 0

Allow Date & Time File Name Prefix:
HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\General
DWORD Value: FilenameType
DWORD Data: 1

Change the Source of the Snap Sound:
HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\Common
String Value: SourceOfSnapSound
Value: \Windows\Snap.wav

Store Pictures Automatically in a Time Stamped Folder:
HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\Captparam\
DWORD Value: EnableDateFolder
DWORD Data: 1

1 last thing, in any case, when you do a registry tweak turn off your device for about 10 seconds, turn it back on then soft reset that way the tweaks save and apply

also to make things easier here is direct PHM registry editor links

For Pocket PC (windows mobile pro):
http://www.phm.lu/products/PalmsizePC/RegEdit/

For Smartphone (windows mobile standard NON touchscreen)
http://www.phm.lu/products/Smartphone/RegEdit/

from xda-developers (you can find s2u2 there too)

navigate to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\A_C\S2U2\DirectDraw and set it to to "0"

For that hack, why do you say it is not recommended for the Touch?

I did this on my 700wx and it worked great, so I was going to do it on my Touch, but after seeing that warning, I figured some people have been having issues with it.

theres a storage card corruption issue with the touch and if you have your e-mail checking and saving attachments to the card from what i read over at ppcgeeks alot of people whos cards got corrupted were saving attachments to the SD card, now if your using S2U2 to prevent the device from fully going to sleep, then you can use the hack, but under default circumstances its highly inadvisable because it can cause your sd card to become garbled/corrupted

To enable higher resolution video recording (adds Large 320x240 and CIF 352x288 resolutions) and higher bitrate do the following:

HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\P2\MainCamSupportCaptSize
Default value is 10 decimal (0xA hex). Change value to 58 decimal (0x3A hex)

HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\Recparam\MP4Large\Bitrate
default value 128000 change it to 1024000

this also comes from ppcgeeks as well.

For the Call History Max one, mine is set to 65535 Decimal. What should I change it to so that I can increase it?

That's what I'm confused about tho, cuz it still deletes entries. I haven't counted to see how many it's holding but if I had to guess maybe 300 or so. I'm used to my Palm OS Treo holding all call entries.
