Thumbs up Essential Reg Tweaks: Faster device/Better battery life

These numerous tweaks I posted over at Ppcgeeks and have found them to be almost essential for a great Moto Q experience.

You'll need the free http://www.phm.lu/products/Smartphone/RegEdit/ to do this. This takes no more than 5 minutes.

*Remember to wait a couple of minutes before soft-reseting your device! Otherwise the changes won't take as they won't be saved to ROM.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Speed Hacks

These have been posted elsewhere but the 3rd one listed here is never mentioned and often left out. A shame since it seems to have the most effect!

The following 3 hacks increase system performance and makes the Q more responsive:

Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE\
Changed limit from 16384 to 32768

Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS
Changed - CacheSize to 4096

(NEW!) Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\StorageManager\Filters\f sreplxfilt
Change “ReplStoreCacheSize” dword decimal value to 4096 or 8192 (edit: I find 4096 best, g-funk finds 8192)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Battery Life

A couple of us have tested this and found a nice increase in battery life. On my Treo 700 it seemed to do nothing but on the Q it greatly helped (I ran for 12 hours yesterday push email in a low signal environment and stayed at 4 bars battery--normally would have been at 2 or 3)

Quote:
"...simple registry trick and hack that will enable power management on several communications protocols to save and conserve the battery life, and thus extend and prolong the battery of the Windows Mobile devices."
Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\AsyncMac1\Parms
Default value type and value are
“DisablePowerManagement”=dword:1
Change to
“DisablePowerManagement”=dword:0

Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\Irsir1\Parms
Default value type and value are
“DisablePowerManagement”=dword:1
Change to
“DisablePowerManagement”=dword:0

Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\PPTP1\Parms
Default value type and value are
“DisablePowerManagement”=dword:1
Change to
“DisablePowerManagement”=dword:0

Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\L2TP1\Parms
Default value type and value are
“DisablePowerManagement”=dword:1
Change to
“DisablePowerManagement”=dword:0

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question but I'm new to the registry hack bussiness. but do you download PHM to your PC or Q? then I'll assume that if its to the PC you navigate from there. Thanks for the info MAL. I had resisted doing any of this but it appears easy and a need.

Awsome post, I am going to have to check this out. I didn't think the battery would be a problem but yesterday it died on me. I hope this helps, I like having a small PDA but miss my treo.

rd one listed

Hey Mal: thanks for the contribution again! Looks like I will dip my toes into registry hacking.

Question: re: PHM Registry Editor. When I went to your link, it says for PPC. Is that ok to download for our Windows 5.0 smartphone ?

I installed the editor but can't seem to find it anywhere on the device. Any help would be great.

Look in "My Documents"

Also - those who do the speed hacks - please report back. I did these the first week I had the Q and it caused the screen to flicker a lot. So, I went back to the original settings. Mala says he has not seen anything like this. Heck, I'll just try'em again and see.....

That's the right link - hit download, then download the ActiveSync version to your PC, then load it via ActivSync. It will then show up in your Menu.
