Thumbs up Free GPS & Sprint Location Services for Novatel S720 & U720!

Sprint Connection Manager v3.08.013, released 8Jan07, activates the Free GPS & Sprint Location Services for the Novatel S720 and U720 datacards on Windows machines . There is a Basic (free) and a Premium service. The details on the Premium service have not been announced yet.

When you install SCMv3.08.013, it will also do a firmware upgrade. If you want PRL 20225 you will need to manually reinstall it afterward as v3.08.013 resets to 20224 (click here for manual instructions).

For GPS & Sprint Location Services to acquire a location you will need to set the Mode to Automatic or 1xRTT; not EVDO Only.

To specify your preferred mapping service, go to C:\Program Files\Novatel Wireless\Sprint\Sprint PCS Connection Manager\GPSModule.exe and choose from Microsoft Live, Map Quest, Yahoo! Maps, Google Maps.

You can use GPSModule.exe to acquire your loacation, but just connecting SCM as you normally do (NDIS mode works too) is easier. Choose Location and Search Services in the menu and just type "home" in the window or select one of the business finders. A new webpage will pop up showing your location and specifying its latitude and longtitude as well as listing the business locaton(s) you requested.

Some helpful info, to include FAQs (Jan 12, 2007 7:34 pm) can be found at www.evdoforums.com/thread4423.html. Sprint's Location Services User Guide can be downloaded at http://www4.sprint.com/pcsbusiness/downloads/Sprint_Location_Services_User_Guide010907.pdf.

Those on the road can track their route using Google Earth>Tools>GPS>Realtime>NMEA>Start. The instructions for it are at http://earth.google.com/userguide/v4/ug_gps.html

Happy GPSing! Way to go Sprint!
