I'm told there is an 800 # you can call that is free directory assistance, but no one seems to know the #. Anyone know anything about this?

TIA

note that it will still use minutes during the day, but still beats the alternative $1.79 a call

How well does the service work? There isn't a problem with them sharing your number out to telemarketers or anything like that is there?

I've heard in the past that the service is supported by advertising announcements in the duration of the call...Not sure how much truth there is to that.

You can also use Mobile AIM via Text Messaging (User Guide available from AOL, pdf format) and contact Mobile AIM Bots by sending various screennames (e.g., AOLYellowPages, AOLBuddy, MovieFone) to 265010.

Thumbs down

1-800-FREE-411.....I was just on the phone with Sprint because of yet more unexplained charges to my bill....and the person talking to me on the phone was trying to tell me that Sprint charges for you to use the FREE 411, 1 800 number....I told them it was illegal....I also asked the lady if they charge you to call other 1-800 #'s, like to place an order with a business or something.....she said Yes.....BS....I told her that it was illegal to charge for a 1-800 anything number....as it is a FREE frickin' call. Talking to Sprint Cust. Serv. is like talking to a parrot that just repeats what it hears or has been told to say....if I didn't have crappy credit, I would have an iPhone with ATT. UGH....keep your bills paid up so that you don't have to resort to Sprint!!!! Thieving idiots!

When you make a phone call during peak times, you use peak minutes. 800 numbers are not "free" calls on cell phones, but that service does get you away from the $1.79 charge.

Now, if sprint is charging you $1.79 for calling "free-411" then you would have a case.

So, if you call between 7am and what ever time your night minutes start, its charged per minute against your plan allotment. After your night start time, and before 7am, its a totally free call. You might want to try and see if sprint will give you "pick 3" and pick the "800-free-411" as one of your free numbers. It's an offer thats only from cancelations, but if you ask nice I bet they will give it to you

Google also offers a free directory assistance phone number service with no advertising interruptions. The number is 800-466-4411.
It only offers numbers for businesses. No residential info is offered

for business, Google is surprisingly good... 800-GOOG411, and it goes on to connect you with the business you want to talk to, all in the same call, no charge...

Does 800free411 do that? (I'll have to try...)

As far as paying for 800 "toll free" calls... that is standard for wireless... AT&T/iPhone has the same situation. To be clear, 800 numbers are not "free". Instead, 800 numbers are where the callee pays for the charges (the company/person that owns the 800 number). Well, there is no way to make a callee pay for your airtime on your carrier. All it means is that the callee pays for any LD charges of the caller, but that's largely irrelevant in the case of wireless...
