connectile dysfunction (unable to maintain connection)

i have a sanyo 4900 phone and called to have it provisioned for
attachable phone as a modem yesterday. i waited the required 4 hours
to get it provisioned and tried it to see if it was working last
night and again this morning. I can make a connection and pull down
a web page on the first try but the connection does not last. on the
first try it will usually last 1-2 minutes. on multiple re-connects,
it usually lasts only a few seconds. I run a tiny ping program to
help maintain the connection and to see if i actually have a
connection. In my living room i have a full signal and the average
ping time is 250-350 while i am connected.

i use futuredials drivers for my sanyo 4900 phone and i set up my
on connection file to dial #777. i am running windows 98 SE on a 700
mhz ibm laptop. i do not use the sprint connection manager. This
configuration has worked well enough in the past that i ran up a $400
bill in January for unauthorized use as a modem so don't know why it
won't work now that i am authorized.

in the past I have noticed that this type of problem seems to be
related to my location. Most of the time i use my phone as a modem
only while traveling. this problem usually occurs when i am not on
sprint's network and roaming on somebody elses towers. That should
not be the case here at my home though because i live in town and the
town i live in is very well covered by sprint's network, we even have
EVDO here according to Sprint's coverage map. MY zip is 39466 and i
live within a half mile of Iinterstate 59.

so far Sprint has been unable to help, does anybody have a solution
or possible solution for my CD problem?
Thanks, dave diamond
