So now that some people have had the phone for a week or so can we start to get some feedback on it? How is the build quality? Does it feel solid? Is finding compatible apps becoming a problem because of the screen size? What have you been getting for battery life on average? How is the keyboard to type on? Fast?

You can find my feedback here (albeit that was written after slightly less than a week of use): http://www.p14nd4.com/blog/2011/11/0...orola-admiral/

The notes I have to add to that (and hopefully will, soon) are:
  • Annoying I can't turn off camera shutter sound; reportedly I might be able to accomplish this by rooting
  • Screen sensitivity is still occasionally an issue / mild annoyance (confirmed by at least one other person, too)
  • Lack of d-pad/trackpad/trackball/arrow keys/ok button is annoying in a couple regards: makes life with ConnectBot (SSH) much more difficult, and while Android 2.3's touch-based cursor navigation is an improvement over earlier versions, it's still not as easy/accurate as arrow keys/etc. (I do this quite frequently when I type my email address at the end of an email, since I prefer the first letter to be uncapitalized, even though I know it doesn't really matter; I use the default setting of capitalizing the first letter of any sentence/line, so have to type the letter twice, then go back and delete the first one that was capitalized. "That's what email signatures are for," you say? Nah, I don't *always* want my address at the end, just for more formal things.)
  • Saw one apparently spontaneous reboot; phone was connected to USB (none), screen off, just sitting there; screen turned on with multi-colored "static" for a second, then rebooted.

Overall I still quite like it, and the battery has been lasting me two days off the charger with: ~5 web pages loaded over 1xrtt or 3g per day, 1-2 bars of signal most of the day; use WiFi at home; a handful of regular and google voice text messages; a couple phone calls; maybe one Youtube video; K9 imap idle going all the time, and forced syncs every hour. The keyboard's been quite good to me, and I'm getting much better at correcting my muscle memory for the shift and alt keys being in opposite places on the Treo, and different alt-key symbol locations; the number layout on the keyboard still pisses me off considerably, though.

Do a search on these forums and the androidcentral forums for 'admiral' to find a little other feedback, too.

Glad you are having a good experience with the Admiral! I'm using it too and think it is a great device for business.

The camera shutter sound is in compliance with a bill in Congress called the "Camera Phone Predator Alert Act" (You can read more about it at: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:H.R.3488:)

Again, glad you are enjoying the phone!

Oh, also, the one other addendum I just thought of is that I did uncover one actual problem using the "zoom to fit screen" display mode (explained in my link above, if you're not familiar). In Go SMS Pro, there's an option to actually draw a picture and send the image [as a link]. When using the 'zoom' display mode, the finger presses on screen don't correspond with where the drawing ends up on screen, so it's essentially impossible to make things line up correctly in a drawing. Using 'full screen' mode for that app eliminates that problem.

Thanks a lot for you input, I've been searching the internet for details (including the sites you mentioned) and I just wanted to see if I could get some additional info before I pick up the phone since there really isn't a lot of info out there about it. Can I ask you specifically if hanging/words with friends works successfully on the phone?

Edit: also, the screen sensitivity issues, does it seem like it is being caused by the screen protector or is there evidence that it may be the screen itself? I don't plan on using a protector of any kind.

Shutter sound is a Sprint requirement, and I have never had an issue with the screen sensitivity. Did you come from a BB? Trackball is their trademark and it is a patent they hold. Maybe try turning off Auto Punctuate to get past the auto caps issue.

I don't know how true that is about the shutter sounds, unless its a relatively new thing, my Touch Pro 2 allowed me to shut the sound off. Its very annoing you can't on some phones.

It is true, all new Sprint devices will no longer have the ability to disable the sound for security reasons proposed by Sprint. I can not share documentation but I am sure if you search you will find proof.

Words with Friends works fine. (Once again, it's not yet installable from the app store, but you can get it from the developer site or another Android device.)

I agree that trying to position a cursor in a text box without a D-pad is a little akward. Fortunately I dont need to do it too often, but when I do that is annoying.

Overall I'm very happy with it. Build feels solid. Keyboard is excellent. I charge it about every-other night and am fine with that.

Minor gotchas here and there. But not much that I wouldn't have expected anyway, or that are not easy to overcome. As always, it depends on what apps you use and how you use them. For example, the DC bugs I hear about don't affect me because I don't use it!

Embrace the app store to help solve problems that don't have built-in solutions. (Omega: There may by an app to silent the camera shutter. I could imagine it requiring root though... like something that deletes the sound file for the shutter.)

I guess I should say I occasionally have trouble connecting to my WiFi network at home, but I'm currently blaming that on my range WiFi range extender. I need to do some more troubleshooting to verify.

I believe you, like I said I was only familiar with older phones. Its cause of creepy guys taking upskirt shots and **** ruining it for the rest of us.

Some other sites have some more Admiral feedback.

Official Motorola forum: Lots of activity. And it's cool because official Motorola / Sprint reps post there.

Android Central: Some activity.

Android Forums: Not much other than the root thread I started.

The thing I noticed is the sensitivity issue. It can get annoying. Dragging does not always drag but rather selects. One quirk is the back button. Not sure if anyone else notices but you have to touch it a bit to the left of the actual symbol or else it won't actually acknowledge the tap consistently. The other icons (home, menu and search) are lined up fine when you tap them. Otherwise nice battery life, solid build quality, fast and smooth web page loading,, and nice to type on. This will easily bring blackberry users to Android.

Yeah found all these during my search, the motorola one is especially good since they talk a lot about the problems users are having with the device.

Is anyone else reporting this issue? This is the first I'm hearing of it.

Haha!

EDIT: I'm picking up my Admiral today after work, can't wait! I'll post a small review after I use it for a bit.
