Here's what I don't get, though. I heard one or more manufacturers say the warranty is void if the case is opened. So the customer's options are to send the phone to the manufacturer or use Sprint's repair service and void their warranty. However, nothing of this is said when the customer goes into the store. They assume that Sprint is acting as the manufacturer's agent when they are not. They are just providing a repair service as anyone could. They do not work for the manufacturer.

As it stands now, customers think Sprint is primarily responsible for the phones they sell. Sprint should either fully accept that responsibility or eliminate that perception and make the manufacturers stand behind their products (like Costco does).

Totally agree. I would be pissed if this happened to me. Having been with Sprint for 10+ years, I never even thought that Sprint was not an authorized repair center. May not be the same case for every manufacturer but I guess for HTC they are not.

It is the same for every manufacturer except RIM and one Motorola model. The former sells their phones to Sprint and contractually requires Sprint to perform all service and repair. Motorola has a new model that I cannot remember the name of and requires customers to go through them (it is the crazy expensive one and comes with a 2 year service warranty).

It sound like the consumer never bought the insurance from what I read. The main reason that I pay the $7.00 insurance is that if something goes wrong I can take it to the sprint repair center and get the phone fix or replaced.

When I was in a repair center this weekend I decided to read the fine print on the receipt they give you when you turn the phone over to them to repair it. The receipt does say "This work is NOT being completed under or as part of the manufacturer's warranty."
