Battery life 3G vs WIFI

Through my nonscientific usage, I always felt that wifi would consume the battery of a phone quicker than using 3g.

I recently found out that using 3g uses more battery than wifi, albeit a small amount.

Can anyone confirm which one it is? My phone primarily will be at home, and if wifi indeed uses less signal, I can just keep it on my wifi network instead of the 3g from now on.

The difficulty, I think, is that WiFi uses much more battery than 3G when idle or disconnected. That is: When you are not actively uploading or downloading data, WiFi requires much more power just to stay connected to the router, or even just to look for a router.

Right?

I guess it depends on your location really. If you are in a place with good coverage 3G shouldnt suck much battery.

Cell phone signals attenuates a lot when we are inside a building and hence while using data it squeezes out more from your battery to make up for the lower signal strength.

BUt when we use wifi, most of the time, we have a good signal strength and therefore a better battery life.

Indoors I seem to get much better battery life with WiFi than 3G.

Outdoors it's hard to tell since I don't use WiFi outside that much but I noticed while camping last year in an area with good reception that battery usage was much lower than it normally is.

Battery life 3G vs WIFI

I have a camera that runs on a big 6 volt battery. It seems to work really well, has a good life span.

I am looking at a new camera but it runs on 6 D cell batteries. Do any of you guys use a camera that uses the D cells. How do they last?
