Linux SuSE 9.3 detects my Sprint phones automatically!!!
I cannot be happier!!! I have SuSE 9.3 Linux, an official distro from Novell. I was really worried that there will be no support for USB modem driver for my phones, Toshiba 4050 and Samsung 740. I have USB cables from 3Gcables (thanks to them!). 3Gcables shipped me the instructions on how to get the Windows XP driver. In my humble opinion, the Windows XP driver installation was a pain, but doable. Worked 50% of the time.
Now I made a switch to Linux. Here is my success story: - looked in internet, found out that SprintPCS Samsung phones should be supported by USB ACM modem driver, a native linux usb modem driver. - plugged in Samsung phone to the USB outlet, my SuSE Linux popped up a message, something like "Detected new hardware: Samsung CDMA modem. Would you like to configure it?". I said 'yes', the SuSE config utility 'Yast' (world-famous) started. I configured with ALL DEFAULT settings, the only thing I had to do was to create a new "custom" provider with name 'sprint', to specify dialup number (#777) and a username - even though sprint does not require username & password, Yast could not take blank username. So I have it '777', which really doesn't matter what you input as a user name. - Next, next, next - all default settings. - In bottom-right corner of the screen (taskbar), I start KInternet (dial-up/internet connect utility) by right-click, select interface->modem0, select provider->sprint, then select 'dial-in'. - That's it!!!! I repeated same thing for my other phone, Toshiba. It detected as Qualcomm phone. Please note that this procedure of auto-detect and configure settings must happen for each of the available USB jacks on the PC. Say, you have 6 USB jacks, if you plug your phone in each of them, there will be a new modem detected, the number will be given incrementally (modem0, modem1, modem2, etc.), and configuration must be done just like I described above. I'm currently posting this message from my Toshiba 4050 SprintPCS connection!!!! Best regards to all folks connecting to Sprint from Linux! |

Yep.... just make sure that you comment out the lcp* options in your /etc/ppp/options file.

Sanyo 8200?
I'm about to try again to make the switch to Fedora core 4, anybody know if it'll support my Sanyo PM8200, or whether not a driver for linux exists?

Ugh... I've been working on this for a while. I have an A920. SUSE 10.1 recognizes it twice as Samsung CDMA Technologies and assigns it to /dev/ttyUSBx and /dev/ttyUSBy, where x and y depend on what other usb nodes are taken. It also counts it as two new devices everytime I plug it into a different usb port. I can't get kinternet or kppp to dial it. I tried Ubuntu, and at first it recognized it as a z100 phone, and it was assigned to /dev/ttyACM0. I symlinked it to /dev/modem and got the default dialer (i forgot what it was called) to work. I was connected to the internet and could download repo info in Yast2 and could browse the web. So I started downloading updates. However, it dropped the connection several times. The first few times, I could just deactivate and reactivate the ppp connection, but then it wasn't working at all (touching nothing else, mind you - redialing just stopped working). So I looked at the hardware info and saw that it was listed as a slightly different listing now, and was not on ttyACM, but something else (forgot what). So I unplugged the phone from the USB port and replugged it to see if it would re-recognize it. It didn't, in fact, my phone now no longer said "USB connected". I later restarted and noticed that the phone now did say USB connected, so I looked to see what it recognized it as - something else entirely. So this thing recognized the phone three times, as three different devices. Never did I get a pop-up saying it detected something, asking if I would like to configure it as the original poster had. I still have not been able to connect reliably to the internet.
I found this: http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/archi...p/t-41005.html . So I was going to try it, but SUSE 10.1 and Ubuntu do not have ppp-on/ppp-of or pppsetup (and I can't connect to a repo to download them). So I'm downloading Slackware now. This has been thouroughly frustrating. Especially since I have a dying monitor that snaps in and out of synch depending on the resolution and refresh rate, so I'm constantly having to change display settings as I work in order to see what I'm doing. AAARGH! By the way, this was my first go with Ubuntu, and it recognized surprisingly little of my hardware. In the hardware manager, about 80% of items were "Unknown Device"; it looked quite funny. That does not seem to be a good way to be user friendly since those are the most troublesome issues to solve. |
