USB tether kills data connection

Every time I tether via usb (yes, I'm using PDANet), it kills my data connection and I have to turn off the tether, put it in airplane mode, restart PDANet, kick the tether back on, or some series of steps like that. Is there an easy workaround for this?

I have no idea how to root my phone, do you have a good "how-to" link?

but i'm sort of confused, you want your phone to still check emails and surf the web while your laptop is tethering??

should be plenty of threads already on rooting. videos on youtube about how to root via "unrevoked" (unrevoked.com)

Enable "data always on" or use z4root for temporary root so you can use wireless tether. That is what I do with my unlimited data .

Sorry for being unclear. What happens when I enable USB, all data on the phone cuts off so I can't get on the web either from the phone or the laptop. I can't remember the exact series of quirky things I have to do to get it to work properly but it is aggravating.

try W7's advice. is mobile data always on? menu>settings>wireless/networks>mobile networks>enable always on mobile data?

Right, it's always on but as soon as I enable tethering, the data connection drops and I get an error 67 which is a common data error. I think if I then put it into airplane mode, then click it back to normal and then turn PDANet back on, I can then connect.

When you connect your Evo via USB to your computer (while using PdaNet) select "Charge Only" not "USB Tethering".

I too have been having the same issue with PDAnet. Though I get a HTC sync error message. I have tried rebooting the phone and the computer sometines it works ohter times it doesnt. I have tried wireless tether but the speeds are really slow compared to usb tethering or PDAnet.
