Arrow Verizon customers will have to pay more to upgrade or add a new line..

While T-Mobile, AT&T and Sprint are all busy trying to convince customers that they have the best rate plans, Verizon is taking a slightly different approach. The company confirmed Wednesday that it is raising fees for upgrades and activations beginning next week.

Activation fees will now be $40, up from $35, starting on Feb. 5, Phone Scoop first reported on Wednesday; upgrade fees will increase to $40 from $30. Verizon last increased its upgrade fees in 2012, and the company says it hasn't raised its activation fees in more than ten years.

Verizon is the largest carrier in the United States with more than 125 million subscribers.

"These fees are not unique to Verizon and help offset costs associated with upgrades, activations, and other operational costs," Verizon spokesperson David Samberg told Phone Scoop. "Verizon Wireless is committed to the fees remaining competitive within the wireless industry."

Perhaps, but it's hard to ignore the fact that the three other major wireless carriers are trying to add new customers with better shared data incentives or lower prices. Sprint and T-Mobile have been particularly aggressive, with Sprint recently offering T-Mobile users at least $200 per line to switch to its service. For its part, T-Mobile is continuing to try to make industry waves with its "un-carrier" promotions, including its latest Data Stash offering.

Even AT&T, which doesn't compete as actively on price as T-Mobile or Sprint, is playing the value-add game with its own take on data rollover.

As the biggest U.S. carrier, Verizon might not feel the need to be as competitive on price or features. What will be interesting to watch is if the other carriers follow suit and raise activation and upgrade fees themselves.
SU is slowly dying, and soon all things must come to an end.
