Thumbs up HD Voice with iOS 7.1 iPhone 5s!?

Did anyone else notice?

I just updated to iOS 7.1 today on my iPhone 5s and when I called 2 people on Sprint with a Note 3 the calls were in HD Voice.

I am trying to get some of my friends to update their iPhones but it seems if you are in an HD Voice market and you have a 5s updating to iOS 7.1 enables the feature.

Can someone confirm as this was not in ANY release notes of iOS 7.1?

what it may be is a carrier update that was included with or downloaded at the same time as ios7.1 if so it wont be in the changelog.

I think it's probably just coincidence. Sprint maybe turning HD voice on in your market. I say that because the iPhone 5 (the actual iPhone 5, not the 5s or 5c) was marketed as HD voice capable. There was never anything you had to do, it was just on if Sprint had it, off if Sprint did not. An OS update wouldn't just all of a sudden "turn it on."

Sprint wouldn't have needed a carrier update to the phone to enable it.

I disagree. I have lived in a market that has had HD Voice for a while.

My friend also has a 5s, I call him, no HD voice. I tell him to update to 7.1 and call me back. He does and boom HD Voice.

Something at least tied to the update unlocked it. I also noticed because like I said in the OP when I called a Note 3 it had HD voice for the first time ever.

Also FYI- no iPhone is listed as "compatible" with HD Voice on Sprint's website.

Ahhh…ok. Apparently Apple advertised the iPhone 5 as HD voice capable (which it is) and mentioned that on launch day twenty carriers would have it. Later on it was acknowledged that at that time none of those 20 carriers were in the US. And Sprint also acknowledged that the iPhone 5 was incompatible with it's version of HD Voice.

So…you're correct. It has to be down to the update. My suspicion though i that even if I installed 7.1 on my iPhone 5, because it's not a 5s I probably would not get HD Voice. The 5s has a few more radio capabilities than the 5.

the iphone 5 had HD voice on 1 carrier in the US. T-Mobile as they were the only carrier at the time with it implemented.

But not on September 21, 2012 (launch day) right? IIRC T-Mobile didn't get the iPhone 5 until the first half of 2013 and the T-Mobile iPhone 5 is an AWS-supporting model. Apple had to produce it in time for the launch on T-Mobile because the standard GSM model was not sufficient for T-Mobile.

So, between launch day and when T-Mobile got the iPhone 5 they couldn't have had HD voice on the iPhone 5 because T-Mobile didn't have the iPhone 5 yet.

Or am I missing something?

I believe so I forget when T-Mobile finally got it because I wasn't keeping track I was using Android still which already had hd voice support I believe it was last April. Most likely they just launched it on us carriers with amr turned off which could later be enabled via carrier update or hack in the case of http://appadvice.com/appnn/2013/06/h...owered-iphones

yep, HD voice enabled on Sprint iPhone 5c and 5s with the recent update.
I never knew it was going to be capable either.
