Google: Profit up 61%, stock to split 2-for-1

Google on Thursday announced a 61% jump in quarterly profit and a 2-for-1 stock split.

The search giant's first-quarter net income was $2.9 billion. Revenue was $10.7 billion, up 24% from a year ago.

"We had a very strong quarter," CEO Larry Page said on a conference call. "I've pushed hard to increase our velocity and improve our execution and focus on the big bets that will make a difference in the world."

Google's chief touted gains in the company's Android operating system, Chrome Web browser, YouTube and Google+ social network. "Well over 170 million people have now upgraded to Google+," said Page. "Google+ is at the heart of our efforts."

But Google's hulking size has forced it to shutter products to stay focused. Google has closed or combined over 30 products, Page said. "We have so many opportunities that without hard choices we end up spreading ourselves too thin and don't have the impact we strive for," he said.

Meanwhile, Google's cost per click declined 12% from a year ago. Cost per click is the price advertisers pay each time a person clicks on their ads. Google's cost per click dropped 8% in the previous quarter.

Shifts in paid clicks don't reflect fundamental changes in the business, said Google CFO Patrick Pichette, "our business is healthy."

There seems to be an epidemic of big corporations not paying taxes. If we could get that straightened out we might get out of this deficit! I am disappointed though to see Google is one of them.

Where's my Mo-Fo Bailout? The gov't likes to hound me and charge me more tax when I make more money. It's not fair. But of course it will NEVER be this way. All because of special interests and government officials payoffs and such. I don't really need to continue to rant about this, as we all know where this is going and what it is all about. Don't me wrong, I Love google and a lot of things they do and support, however, it's a shame that they are starting to fold and lose touch and focus on their core values, the people and it's users.

You aren't rich enough to pay off Congress to get that bailout or any of the perks the corps get.
