I think the most economical is to simply send a text for 50 cents telling the family all is ok. However need to remind people that text you alot not to text you because once phone is turned on to text you will receive texts.

Another option if you really want a mobile phone is to pick up a cheap prepaid Gophone. Gophone has a 25 cent per minute roaming rate for calls within Mexico and from Mexico to the U.S. Not too bad if you don't need to talk for hours. We did this on a recent Mexico trip, the phone worked well everywhere we used it.
The problem with using a local SIM purchased in Mexico is that they offer a good rate for calls originated from the region where you buy the SIM, but if you travel to a different region the rates typically are much more expensive, even for calls within Mexico. So if you are staying within a single area the Mexico SIM approach can work OK, but it's not so good if you are traveling around the country. Last edited by JPSmith; 07-29-2010 at 02:29 PM. |
