I agree. If I ever get 4G, I will switch back to Fresh most likely. But I love the customization and elimination of crapware I don't use on CM6. I need to flash and try one of the nightlies.

have you donated money to the developer of Fresh? if not, your going to have to wait for its release, either today or tomorrow.

I'm currently using build number #136 and it's working well for me. I really like the icons at the top of the pull down menu for wi-fi, bluetooth etc. It's a nice touch.

PS............the Snap kernel doesn't seem to work with the nightlies, at least it wouldn't for me. I ended up using the included kernel.

Seriously cutting into my Fallout New Vegas time.

Shauli 10-27-2010 08:54 PM

Just flashed my first custom ROM - Ava-FroyoV9. It's basically a regular Sense ROM with a whole bunch of visual tweaks, (including lock screen, launcher, boot animation and a few others) and a blue color scheme instead of green. There are also supposedly some "4G tweaks" - well below in my signature are my new high speeds since flashing this ROM!

I just had stability issues with cm6. Fresh is still rock solid for me. I do like the options with cm 6 though.

so far the only issue is it has messed up the timing of my bootanimation and sound.. my sound starts 2 or 3 seconds after the bootanimation has already started..

plus i had to reinstall a bunch of visual tweaks, themes. but overall its nice with kings cfs 11. been using my phone heavier than usual and after 7 hours still at 60% battery life

]Just flashed MikFroYo ROM yesterday. You won't believe it till you see it! Although it is a Sense ROM, it is completely themed and the transition animations are incredible! And it comes pre-cooked with many things, including the Hotspot hack, King BFS #11 which has the most amazing battery life and many more. Worth a try for anyone looking for a change but wants Sense and 4G.

Running Fresh 3.4.0.1 with King's #11 CFS. Better battery than I've had before, I think. 10 and 1/2 hours of moderate use with 50% remaining. Does Fresh updater include different themes? I only seem to see the Vanilla Lock enable in the Fresh updater.

Beer Abuser 11-03-2010 01:14 AM

As far as I know flipz does not include themes, but you can flash any theme on top of it - make sure to check XDA thread for compatibility with fresh rom.

+1 on Sense. I never understood why there is so much hating on Sense in threads of other ROMs at XDA.
And You've missed quite a bit. Aside from the new custom ROMs springing up every day, there have been a multitude of tweaks and fixes for the EVO. Examples are a tethering & hotspot hack, 4-in-1 reboot options in the power menu and many more cool stuff. Here is a link to one of these threads http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785271&highlight=Calkulin's+Mods+ fixes
And there are many more. 5 apps in a row in the app drawer. battery percentage in the battery icon. etc.

BrettW 11-04-2010 11:00 PM

ill look into that, i did install the netarchy-toastmod-4.2-bfs-bfq-havs-more-smartass-universal (More Aggressive Undervolting) kernel, i highly recommended it over stock its fast and based on a half drained battery i can already see battery life improvements

Shauli 11-05-2010 01:24 PM

Iv'e been using King's BFS #11 kernel. What can I say - the most amazing battery life Iv'e had to date!

Beer Abuser 11-09-2010 04:36 PM

ZipEE Sense 2.0 DesireHD port / rom freaking sweet! :tu:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=799108

http://zipeetek.com/content/download...-2-0-desirehd/

The skins are super nice & apply to clock / widgets also. The equalizer to speaker / head piece / bt is nice to see. Rom is stable & has goodies all over the place from all window bars changing to theme, to super fast stock browser (unless its due to phone wipe), to window browser switching animations, to download other skins, widgets, internal widgets (i.e. linked-in, etc), ringtones, to online media centers & much more...

Only cons so far, no 4G, cam, hdmi & visual voicemail...hopefully the dump being passed around recently will fix these - I'm in sense love again :), well at least for now lol.

Don't worry too much about SetCPU. King himself has said a few times on his thread that his kernels are designed to not need apps like SetCPU or OC Widget. I have taken his advice and have not been using OCW for months and my battery with BFS #11 couldn't be better!
Btw, I heard BFS #12 is out. Didn't have a chance to get it yet. I don't know how much better things can get anyway... Check it out on his site!

As far as I'm concerned King is the failure. I support developers and I'll donate for a good rom, but King takes it way too far for way too little. I won't use any of his stuff, not because it's not good, but because I don't agree with his practices.

did you fix it, if not i can tell you how its because the sprintzone.apk file is removed but the rom stores it on your SD card all you have to do is install the app and you will be able to dial *2 again

I didn't see the sprintzone.apk on my sd card so I did a search and it showed up. I clicked on it and it installed it. It's working now. I tried it twice and got two sprintzone voice checks. Maybe there's a setting to turn that off? Thanks

Has anyone noticed significantly worse battery performance using a 3.30.651.2 based ROM? There is some speculation that on Evo's with 0003 or 0002 hardware revision it drains battery faster because of the maybe "incompatible" hardware types.

For battery life, King BFS #11 rules! Iv'e been getting the best battery life. Though obviously it varies from ROM to ROM and phone to phone.
Also check out superpower app on the market. It has many settings which can basically automate your phone as to when to have 3G, wifi, GPS etc. on or off. For example, I have it set to turn off 3G if screen is off for 5 minutes. When you turn screen on again it will immediately turn 3G back on. I think it really saves battery life.
Currently running MikFroYo 3.2. Its got the coolest transition animations, 4*5 workspace on home screens, flip clock animation from Desire HD and JsChiSurf port of power control widgets into the notification pull down screen. Worth checking out.

Here are a few. It's not drastically different from what I had before as I already ran Launcher Pro with the text icons. The main differences are the notification drawer, top notification bar, and lock screen which I both really really like the look of. There are just sutle tweaks all over from slightly different colors, shading, fonts, et. The pictures just doesn't do it justice. Install it and it really pops out how much different it is. The devil really is in the details. The little Android guy in the bottom of the notification drawer is just cool. I haven't really had time to give it a fair shake but my thoughts so far:

-performance is not as good as Fresh with King's Kernal. I haven't had a chance to try a different kernal but Ziggy's is getting really good reviews for it and plan to try it this afternoon.
-battery life isn't great. BUT, only use from a full charge was last night but the part of town I was stuck in gets horrid reception, zero bars most of the time so it was trying really hard to get a signal.
-LP has been crashing occasionally. It came bundled with the ROM. I may try an uninstall it and reinstall a fresh copy from the market.

All in all I really like it and don't plan on going back to Fresh anytime soon.

Also not this version is mostly Senseless, he does make a full sense version as well for those that prefer it.

boomhower 11-23-2010 04:07 PM

After using VirusRom for a few days here what I think in a nutshell: great ROM, crappy battery life.

I uninstalled Launcher Pro and installed a fresh copy from the market and that took are of all the stability and other issues. Performance is fine but no OCing at this point. Supposedly their is a new release around the corner that will play with kernal a bit better. OCing in my experience didn't improve performance much but killed battery life so it's not a huge deal to me. But, kernal improve battery life and that's something this ROM needs. My job entails spending large amounts of time in my car so it's not crucial to me, but I know I am the exception to the rule. For this ROM to get to Fresh levels of acceptance battery life has got to improve. For me, I am going to keep rocking the Virus as the looks just work awesome.

Also to note it has a hacked Sprint hotspot so no fiddling with aftermarket hotspot apps that are spotty as best. By far the best tethering experience I have had.

Shauli 11-23-2010 05:14 PM

@ boomhower, the ROM isn't necessarily bad with battery but maybe the kernel it uses. Try flashing a different kernel. King's BFS # 11 has gotten me the best battery life by far. As we speak, my phone has %18 left, and it's been unplugged for over 16 hours. And I used my phone quite a bit, including the Hotspot.

KB112 11-23-2010 08:54 PM

Fresh hasn't impressed me with the battery life yet. Didn't see much difference from 3.4 to 3.3 nothing extreme at least. I havent tried flashing kernels/radios yet. Still too skerred.

Flashing kernels is the easy part. Once you got through rooting and flashing a custom ROM, you can flash a kernel in a flash. (Pun intended!)
Just find the kernel you want (I recommend King's BFS #11), wipe Cache and dalvik and flash it like any other zip.
A Nandroid backup is always recommended, just in case you want to go back to stock.

Fresh by far has given me the best battery life of all the roms. Flashing a kernel is no different than flashing a rom. It's no big deal. I flash the rom and then the kernel and then boot up. I've never had a problem.

:ohcrap: Strange I tried it because of you and some others here and some folks on twitter and my battery life could not be better... I got 11 hours running 4G all day on Monday. I never got such life out of Fresh. I guess it all depends. I am in LOVE with it though. Which Virus Rom were you running?

I'm using the Christmas Rom but I don't like the fonts. How can I get normal fonts?

@ boomhower, the ROM isn't necessarily bad with battery but maybe the kernel it uses. Try flashing a different kernel. King's BFS # 11 has gotten me the best battery life by far. As we speak, my phone has %18 left, and it's been unplugged for over 16 hours. And I used my phone quite a bit, including the Hotspot.

I've been busy the last couple of days and hadn't gotten a chance to read up on what kernals played nice with Virus. If Kings does then I will jump on it, I used it to great success with Fresh. I had just done some light reading when I downloaded it and everyone that asked about custom ROMs was recommended to wait for the Virus 4.0 update and then to use Ziggy's kernal. Hell, I may just give it a shot and see, I've got a couple hours before I have to go back to work.....

Maybe I am being a bit hard. My usage is very hard. I stream Slacker and Pandora almost constantly and my coverage isn't the best around here so it works pretty hard searching for a signal. Compound that by the fact I am streaming the audio over BT and it just gets worse. I certainly am hard on the battery so granted I am not a typical user. With any phone I can't go far from a charger with that kind of use.

You could try this & if you do, make a nandroid backup & font backup just in case...

On the original post he links to a download of several different fonts. You can download that and pick one.

Do you recommend Anthrax or Airbourne out of the Virus Roms?

I am loving Anthrax but I never tried the other

thekarens 11-24-2010 05:11 PM

I just flashed it. Did a complete wipe before flashing, but I'm beginning to think something hinky is going on. It seems to be stuck on my splash screen.....grrrrr

thekarens 11-24-2010 05:52 PM

A couple initial thoughts about this Rom. It's super slick! Love the layout and how it functions. Flashing the rom and kernel together did not work for me. Also, when I try to do a batch restore using Titanium it causes the phone to reboot. I tried several times so I'm now installing one by one so that's kind of a bummer.

I use Airbourne but haven't tried Anthrax. Anthrax is more base sense and airbourne has some sense cut out of it. That's oversimplifying it but the gist of it.

I had that issue as well. What I ended up doing to get it to stick was wipe EVERYTHING. Boot. Stuck on flash. Pull battery. Reflash ROM but wipe nothing. Everything works. Took some trial and error but that's what finally worked.

Titanium and I have never gotten along well. So my method is to use appbrain to reinstall the apps and then Titanium to restore data to needed apps.

Haven't been here for a while and now I see there's a new ROM for me: Fresh 3.4.0.1

I do have a question since I have only flashed a ROM once.... Do I need to delete/remove the prior version (3.3.0.1) before or after I flash the new ROM?

Also, I'm planning to go with King's BFS # 11... but what is BFS vs CFS? There's 2 lists of Kernels on his site...

http://kingxklick.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=117

Thank you

Shauli 11-24-2010 07:47 PM

The BFS vs CFS question has been asked many times in King's thread at XDA. I never got a complete answer, but it seems that a complete answer would involve a lot of the more technical differences in the code, which most of us don't care for and wouldn't understand anyway.
The bottom line seems to be, CFS kernels are better for stability and battery life. BFS is more geared towards performance, like smoothness and speed.
But that's all in theory. My experience with BFS kernels has been that they are great for battery too. I'm running BFS # 11 and it has been giving me the most amazing battery life, without SetCPU or anything like that.
Highly recommended, but of course performance will vary from phone to phone.

badassdes 11-24-2010 08:23 PM

Thank you Shauli.
Done! Fresh 3.4.0.1 and King's BFS # 11... Easier than I thought. :tu:

Funny thing is I've always had good luck with Titanium and problems with App Brain. This time it was just the opposite.

What I ended up doing was pulling the battery and booting into recovery. I then wiped everything, installed the rom and booted up and signed in. I then booted back into recovery, wiped davlik and cache and flashed the kernel and rebooted. Then I flashed the glass clock because I really dislike the sense clock.

I'm using the Anthrax virus rom.

Here's some pics of the Rom. The home screen the only thing I changed at all was the clock. I don't like the traditional sense clock so I replaced it with one of the glass clocks. One thing I love is on the main home screen the two circles on the bottom (left and right) can be programmed to launch and program or widget.

The last shot is of the email widget. You can have it like I do as "cards" or you can have it just as a list.

Very nice

Beer Abuser 11-24-2010 10:35 PM

tyekarens & boomhower, just curious, what were you Haiti to flash roms when you had issues? Rom manager + clockworks? Or ra?

From my experience, clockworks gives me a headache sometimes, but I like how it downloads them & wipes phone for you lol.

I always put the rom and kernel on the sd card. I boot into recovery using rom manager, but then I use RA to wipe and flash. I've always done this and this is the first rom that I've ever had any problems with flashing.

I should also say I think this rom is well worth the trouble I had. It's very slick!

Cool beans - it does look nice, I'll give it a spin this weekend :).

Yay I rooted.

Why can't I figure out how to load a ROM now. Ugh.

Simple....

Download rom to main directory of sd card - make sure rom is for Evo & follow any additional steps needed on that thread.

Turn off phone, press & hold volume down + power button.

Now it will boot into recovery, go to nandroid, do a backup.

Now depending if you're running clockworks or ra recovery, wipe phone, then phone cache, then dalvik - look in all options until you have done all 3 - doing it twice is also a good idea.

Now click on install zip from sd card, now browse your sd, and select the rom.

Let it do its thing, and wait until it fully boots up - check out the link for a little more info - note: rom manager & clockworks is being used, same concept nevertheless...

http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/05...ackup-restore/

P.s. If the phone feels like its frozen, just give it extra time - don't panic, sometimes some rom take a while to boot up the first time. Videos on flashing roms are available on YouTube also :).

MikeV 11-25-2010 01:59 AM

Sweet. That I can do.

Same process to flash a kernel after that?

MikeV 11-25-2010 02:17 AM

Booyah. VirusRom. Thanks Beer Abuser, I'll have a Chimay Blue in your honor tomorrow..
