Yep your rooted. To be sure look for the super user app in your app drawer.

MattWeed9 12-31-2010 09:46 AM

Yeah it's there, and tethering works too. So for anyone else wanting to root who have the newer Evo's 004, and have all the updates, this method does work 100%.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...29045&page=276

Thanks for the help.

Think I will leave it on the Rom that came with the package for now. I believe it was Sprint Lovers Rom.

tbakergobuck 12-31-2010 10:24 AM

This is a simple one click option to root (unrevoked beta). After I uninstall my htc drivers it worked. :D

Lol, looks like the phone manufacturers are going to just make hardware changes to screw us out of features instead of just trying to put in software blocks.

yea i did some deep reading into this all last night htc changed the partition map just to screw with things.... RA fixed it first although they should rename it from 1.08 to 1.08B or something since that is a big point of confusion and clockwork seems to have a new version out too although i am too scared to use it now lol although i do have a backup of my wimax partition and RSA keys so i guess there is nothing that can go wrong really.

jpkboca 12-31-2010 04:14 PM

How do i backup my wimax rsa keys and partition, just to be safe?

Thanks,

Jeff

MattWeed9 01-01-2011 01:04 PM

Okay, so after I rooted I flashed the Sprint Lovers Rom that came with the the download within the rooting instructions. So this morning I flashed the MikFroyo 4.2 and I like it for the most part. However, since rooting both Roms seem to heavily drain my battery. I can actually watch the percentage drop while using my phone. I am assuming flashing a custom kernel would probably help with this, however I have never flashed a kernel before. I have a few worries, mainly hard ware functionality. Is there any kernels that are recommended for the newer Evo's with the 004 hard ware versions? And any other important or useful info I should know before proceeding?

tool2269 01-01-2011 01:26 PM

Are you sure there's no rogue apps running constantly or something? Flashing a kernel is exactly like flashing a rom from sd card. Just make sure to do a backup.. then wipe.. them flash the kernel.

MikeV 01-01-2011 02:04 PM

Tried the newest CM, 6.1.2 just for fun.

Again, Titanium Backup can't restore my SMS/MMS messages.

Unfortunately, that's a deal breaker for me unless there is some other way to do it that I don't know

Are you SMS and MMS that important. It's a given to me when switching ROMs you wipe your phone which means you lose those. What's so important that you have to retain them? If it's a pic from MMS, save it to your SD card. That's what I do. Gotta clean the SMS out once and awhile because they just take up space.

Of course this is just IMO. ;)

MikeV 01-01-2011 02:16 PM

Because it's data that I would like to retain. I do a full wipe (twice, actually) when I flash a ROM, but that's the whole reason I use Titanium backup.

Does it really matter what the data is?

Yeah I am pretty sure that it is not a app. I looked around and didn't see anything that wasn't stock from the Rom. Other then Titanium, I only have hot reboot installed. I also have adjusted the settings to my normal use. Screen brightness between 20-30, all syncing off, etc. I'll take a look at some kernels later and do some reading before flashing just to make sure there isn't issues with them and my hardware version.

MikeV 01-01-2011 02:30 PM

OK, more searching on the CM forums. It appears that Titanium Backup won't restore the data to CM. Something about the Sense integration, I guess.

I'm flashing back to Virus and then will try using one of the SMS backup programs that writes it all to an XML file on the SD card and then reflash CM and restore.

tbakergobuck 01-01-2011 02:42 PM

I'm using MikFroyo 4.2 with the Kernal that comes with it and battery life has been good for "me". Only thing I've done is I got rid of the friends thing on the home screen and turned off sign in automatically and singed out of talk.

That is a known issue. You can't necessarily restore certain apps/data when going from a Sense ROM to AOSP ROM which is what CM is. I don't believe there is a way to rectify the problem.

Do notice I said it was my opinion. I understand that data may be important to you, I don't see it that way, but you are entitled to your opinion. :D

Never the less, sounds like if you want to run CM or any other AOSP ROM you won't be able to restore this data. Sorry.

MattWeed9 01-01-2011 03:23 PM

I just flashed this one, seemed to be well liked.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876590

Figured I would put the info in my signature too so I don't have to check my phone every time I need help just to remember what the Roms and Kernels are called lol.

Charging now and monitoring with Battery Monitor Widget from the market "free". Seems to be charging pretty fast. He says to leave it on for 30 minutes past 100% though for the best results. Either way, the guy definitely knows way more about batteries and voltage then I do lol. Guess I should of monitored loss before I flashed the new Kernel, but I have a pretty good idea of how much was being used from the time I unplugged. Just not dead on numbers like I would have liked for comparison.

If I get anything worth posting about out of it, I'll give a update on it.

Hmm, you know I never thought of signing out of talk before, I never use it on my phone anyways. Couldn't hurt I guess and might help a little.

Incorrect!

I found SMS Backup and Restore, which writes all of your SMS/MMS information to an XML file on the SD card.

Flashed back to VirusROM, restored my SMS info from Titanium, saved with SMS Backup and Restore, flashed CM 6.1.2, installed the app again, and restored my data.

So it's possible, if not a little time consuming if you aren't exactly sure which steps to take.

Is there a flashable zip somewhere for the little circular battery meter that displays a percentage?

Do you mean a widget? If so try circle battery widget. If you mean a taskbar icon, I think the Riptide Theme has one.

my only complaint about the 'stock battery percent' is it does not show any % that end in "zero"..i.e. 90%, 80%, etc. it'll just show a green battery when it gets to that percentage

Anyone got any feed back on Cyanogen Roms? I haven't have compiled a rom myself so I was looking to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=886294 and was thinking of giving it a go. I've never used his Roms before and heard they are something special.

I'm using CM6.1.1 and love it. Has been the only other ROM I've used besides Fresh ROMs. Lots of customizations and it's an AOSP ROM vs a Sense based ROM. Takes a little bit of getting used to, but I have no complaints. My suggestion is give it a whirl. A lot of people seem to like it. I can't speak for compiling your own ROM.

Funny that I'm thinking of trying something new because I have been using it faithfully for months.

I believe CM7 will include Gingerbread but I haven't seen any official releases or beta release for it. Granted, I haven't looked for it either. I usually give them a little time to work out the bugs. CM6.1 is Froyo.

MattWeed9 01-03-2011 12:46 PM

Ah, this link is for CM7 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=886294

Although I can't seem to get Gapps to work, so I am going to try out a different Rom.

Edit: I do love however, when you press the power button it blacks out like old tube based TV's used to lol. I am easily amused...

Diana Prince 01-03-2011 02:33 PM

I've been using CM6 for a few weeks and love it. I just switched to Fresh (for the first time) last night. The tweaks and mod on the Cyanogen ROM will keep you going forever. Truly. I didn't flash to 6.1.2 because I kept getting random reboots. But 6.1.1 was really cool. Trying Fresh now and so far so good. Not as many mods as CM but seemingly more stable.

I'm waiting to try Damage Control 4.0.

6.1.2 isn't really needed unless you have a newer EVO. It's for the newer hardware EVOs. 6.1.1 is fine if that works for you.

About to try Calkulins ROM today. Been on Fresh 3.5 and had horrific battery life. Currently on RicSim Stock Turbo ROM, it's OK, but I don't want all of the bloatware Sprint adds. Have tried Cyanogen's but without 4G support I can't keep using it since I am in a 4G area and use it often.

Calkulins is a pretty good Rom, I tried it out for about a day and a half. I just rooted my Evo, so I am trying to play with the ones I like for a while before settling on one.

Edit: MikFroyo is another good Rom, pretty smooth and fast.

I got a different version of gapps to flash for the "Cyanogen 7.0.0 2.3.1 gingerbread", Going to give this a go instead of 6.1.2. I work for a few hours tonight, hopefully all will be well.

There is no official Cyanogen 7 yet. The Cyanogen 7 on XDA isn't being done by Cyanogen and Team Douche. Not that it's not a good rom, but it's not the same thing as the official releases or nightlies from Cyanogen.

Well, aosp and CM are are open source. They are using the CM source, but the work isn't being done by the CM team and to my knowledge cyanogen isn't complaining so... personally I'll wait for the official CM version.

Sounds to me like you're the one that needs to relax. My post had nothing to do with you and in no way referenced anything you have said so I have no idea where you're coming from.

There's nothing wrong with what the guys on XDA are doing or with the rom. I was just clarifying what their rom is and isn't.

Wow! MIUI is a whole other beast to play with. I am missing some things from CM ROM though. I miss the lockscreen gestures and the widget setup (grouping) on CM6 is superior, but it is fun to have something new to play with. Keeps me from buying new phones. Also, am looking forward to some of the themes on MIUI as it is supposedly easy to switch them. The lockscreen on MIUI is nice and I like how you can have a different image on it. Also, the images are nice and crisp.

LOL, I let that one go because I know when it comes to tech toys and rooting etc people online generally assume you're a guy, not a girl, no biggy :D

For the person who said something about switching themes in MIUI, it's EXTREMELY easy. There's a theme manager app on there that you only have to click on the one you want. You can pick a pre-loaded one or download one of the zillions out there to the theme manager.

+1 on this.

Met up to root a fellow's EVO this past weekend and even though I was the only person sitting in the place w/ a laptop and was staring right at him, he kept texting that he didn't see me. When he realized he'd been texting a woman he seemed a bit floored. After we talked a bit about ROMs and rooting, he came around.

Honestly, it's probably best just to try some out and see for yourself. With so many different taste and needs not to mention some Roms work flawlessly on some phones and not others, it ended up being the best for me at least. I finally got a good set up that seems to be running well on my phone. I finally seem to be getting good battery life and it seems run smoothly. First time ever I have taken my phone off the charger and the battery life didn't drop almost instantly. so far it's been 3 hours with little use and I am at 95%.

There's no reason why there has to be a "final" one. I generally change about once a week, partly trying out new things and partly because I like variety. You also need to check each rom to determine what is working and what isn't and if it meets your needs. I really like LiquidRush that I'm running right now, but it has some flaws that would make it a deal breaker for some.

Off topic, but Cyanogen tweeted earlier that he's running Cyanogen 7 Kang on his own phones and loves it.

Flashed Fresh over that stupid sprint lovers rom thank god so much better and the only issue i had was gmail would force close, cleared out cache and data for it and its back to normal. oh and i lost the new market but i dont like it anyways so i find that a bonus :-)

Duffman 01-04-2011 10:17 PM

You should get the new Market back in short order. I believe it updates automatically. I have Fresh and got the new Market.

Did you use MIUI? How was your battery life? My battery dropped almost 50% last night. :( I'm going to try another kernel and give it another day or two...if it doesn't improve, I'm probably going back to CM6.1.1.

The combo I have right now listed in my signature is the best combo i've found so far for me.

I used Fresh forever on my Hero first and then on my EVO. But I left it several months ago because I didn't feel like flipz was doing much with it because he has been too busy with life. I understand that and harbor no ill thoughts, but I want a ROM that has continued development. Just my personal preference.

I think Fresh is an excellent and stable sense ROM. I just get bored and like to try new things. Not a lot new, unfortunately, with Fresh.

MattWeed9 01-05-2011 08:41 AM

To anyone who does try out the CM7 Rom, I highly recommend the ADW EX launcher. Really helps to improve the overall feel. Actually, I recommend that launcher for just about anything, over all awesome launcher.

Really thinking about giving CM another try. I'm really liking Myn's RLS 5 beta though.

tool2269 01-05-2011 11:04 AM

has anyone been able to remove/hide the GPS and Alarm icons using this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780614

i tried but nothing happend. maybe someone has a flashable zip that does this for me?

Also anyone w/ Fresh and Vanilla lock... any way to disable the menu button from unlocking the phone? I used to flash a menu-disable zip but I dont think it works on 3.70 since I keep getting stuck in bootloops when i flash it. I flashed the vanilla lock from Fresh Updater.

1.0b is what I use.

I used and liked MIUI. When it went to 12.24 my battery dropped. Previous build was better for me. Have had pretty good luck with the Savage kernel.

I've stuck with 12.24 for now. The battery life seems to be much better with the Savage 1.5.2 CFS kernel. I can definitely confirm the CPU activity has dropped down to what I'm use to seeing with other ROMs. So I will give MIUI a few more days since I seemed to have fixed the battery problem.

I'm having issues getting it to even load. I tried in clockwork but it said it couldn't load because of spaces. I tried to fix it but still didn't work. I tried to load form recovery but it said it work but when I went to restart it showed a bunch of colors which I figured wasn't good. Then went it a continues boot. I flashed back and not trying a different rom. Maybe it's because of user error or new boot. lol

KB112 01-05-2011 10:28 PM

Did you try re-downloading the zip? I had one get corrupt on me from one of the file sharing sites. DL'd again from a mirror and it was gravy.

It's stable, but still has several glitches like no led.

No LED would drive me crazy. That's something that drives me nuts about my wife's Optimus (and her too). No LED!

I’ve had that issue with a few Roms and for me it was always an issue with the kernel. Not sure about your case, might help to try another.

tbakergobuck 01-06-2011 09:16 AM

You might be able to at least get the led to work using Handcent?

th3taman 01-06-2011 09:46 AM

Changing themes on MIUI is easy. :D
