ok so my phone a sanyo MM 8300 got mest up, my friend has a sanyo 8100 that i can use, now she owes sprint over 800 dollars which she is not trying to pay, this account has already been closed i believe for 1 year, when i called yesterday (she gave me all her information) they couldnt even find any info on the account because the phone # had already been given to someone else, i was then told by the Social that it had gotten sent to a collection agency but he had no info on what phones where on it or anything else, do you think there is a possibility to transfer the phone to my account without any problems???

It's always possible, Just call sprint with the ESN and give it a shot. The worst thing they could say is "I'm sorry, that phone is already tied to another account"....

Hi,
Just to let you know ....I had the same prob.....went to sprint corporate store and they told me that the phones can't be used until the other persons account was paid off. I did however, find out that Radio shack sold refurb phones at 20 to 30% off.
hope this helped.....even if its not good news

hurry!!! lol :p
anyway usually the phone won't be cleared until that account is paid off. i had a similar problem last year. my other account with sprint was up in a few months so i decided to close that account and add a new one with my family so the rep with sprint offered to pay off my last three bills. she forgot about it and then i get notices on sprint that i haven't paid my account and it just keeps getting higher. my friend needed to use the phone that was currently on the account but could not activate it because it was still tied to the account. well finally that rep paid off my account and then the esn was clear to activate. it was annoying but worth not having to pay three months of my sprint bill.

I don't know why Sprint would do that. I'd have to say its a bit illegal. If someone owns the phone and chooses to sell it etc they can't hold it over their head and not activate it for someone else. I'd be fileing a complaint with the attorney general in my state right away if they pulled some crap like that. On the other hand pay your bill! =) But regardless if a customer breaks their contract Sprint can NOT black list their phones ESN etc. If there is something in the agreement that says something about this I missed it. It just dosn't seem right to me though. Plus if someone got laid off etc and had really nice phones and was selling them to pay Sprint off etc I would think they'd want the money they could get and what not. I don't know seems pretty crappy if that is their policy, especially if it's not stated in the contract.

oh i totally agree that and the fact that loyal customers get the crapiest deals on purchasing on a new phone its like you have to basically pay the entire cost. When i use to have AT&T and something would happen to my phone i could always get a new one from them either one of the free phones or something with the same discount that new customers would get. I mean i love my sprint service and ive been with them for a number of years now...but they suck when it comes to treating loyal customers well.

you got something in exchange for the contract, namely a discount on a phone. If you owe $800 to sprint your phone should be held as unuseable on the sprint network!

The phone is still useable on any other PCS CDMA network operating at 850/1900mhz. Its really no different than if a GSM carrier refused to activate a phone that had a balance due on it, except you could always swap sim cards from one phone to another. Even at that, the carrier knows what phone you are using!

That is the ONLY thing I prefer about GSM vs CDMA. I stick in my SIM card and am good to go. While they do know what phone I'm using as LONG as it isn't a stolen phone then it dosn't get "blacklisted" on their network so to speak. I don't agree with them HOLDING the ESN over your head. The consumer OWNS the phone/esn therefore they should be able to do what they wish with it and not be forced to resort to using it as a paperweight. In the LONG run Sprint get's their money from the customer if they pay or not. They file it as a loss and get a nice tax credit. I'm not by any means saying don't pay your bill. However if something came up (sick child, death in the family, etc) and the person was unable to pay their bill and called and told them this and agreed to pay the ETF and whatever they owed and was planning on selling their phones as a source of money to take care of the debt they should have that option.

I think it's perfectly within Sprint's rights to do this - pay your bills. They don't own the ESN, Sprint owns the ESN, and they can choose not to activate the phone as they see fit.

As a private business, Sprint can have whatever business practice they see fit, and if they don't want to activate phones associated with bad accounts then they don't have to. I'm afraid your AG wouldn't be able to do anything about it.

I would still prefer that we had R-UIM cards but I doubt we'll see them until the hybrid handsets come out.

Small Business owner here, if you buy a phone from me at the discount price(I pay more than I sell them for, Sprint reimburses) and you disconnect or don't pay during the first six months, I get charged back! Sprint doesn't eat it. Corporations don't eat anything. they transfer it into costs and roll it back to the consumer.
Sorry for the rant, but something to remember.

Glad to hear everything worked out for you, but be careful about doing that in the future! Sprint can be real jerks about activating phones on 'bad' accounts.
