Is Sprint's coverage really expanding into new areas or are they just adding EV-DO in areas where they already have their 1X digital PCS service? There are so many areas that the Nextel side has service and the Sprint side has none. In particular, in my area, in eastern Ohio along I-70 just east of Cambridge, there is a 40 mile stretch on highway with "roaming only" for the Sprint side, though the Nextel side has some service there.
I've noticed though, that there has been many antennas added to most of the towers in the area, so that might be a sign of two things, maybe Verizon is moving into Alltel areas here in far east Ohio, or 'hopefully' Sprint is expanding coverage. Any news on this?
Thanks in advance

I have yet to see any Nextel towers coverted to CDMA but hopefully soon. These things take time as they have to apply for permits and negotiate additional lease deals.

Chances are if you're not roaming, VZW doesn't have service there either. Cingular might though, but you'd need a gsm phone to know for sure.

I meant converted so that both CDMA and IDEN are on them.

They are just getting started on this part of the merger. It will happen in corporate markets only though. Affiliate markets are left out of the loop once again. By the end of next year every "Sprint" and "Nextel" site "should" have both CDMA and iDEN on them. Notice I said "should" and "Sprint" and "Nextel", and did not mentioning any affiliates. That's because affiliate markets are not Sprint Nextel's problem, according to Sprint Nextel anyway. But anything can change in a moment's notice, although in this case it's not very likely.

On the Oregon coast they've added CDMA antenna's to the iDEN towers that were already there. I hear more additions are to come.

Interesting if true. I wonder what's taking them so long to do it here.

Adding towers is a very complicated process... it takes 18 months minimum to get a tower from cradle to execution. For existing towers, its also a very lengthy process. They are being converted, but a LOT of issues have to be factored in such as getting the additional pipes for service, frequency level, crosstalk/signal crossing avoidance etc.

According to our local and city government's, and yes I have inquired with all of them around here. 90 days is the longest it takes to get approval for a new site, including the tower. Then construction must begin within another 90 day's, or the approval process must begin all over again. Most new sites are being built on city, township, county properties, since there is no mandated 90 waiting period for aproval on these. Some sites were being cunstructed the very same day the application was turned in. So not all areas take this long for a new site.

I haven't noticed ANY improvements in coverage in my area with Sprint since I signed up with them almost 2 years ago. They really need to work on improving the coverage because every other carrier has expanded their coverage a lot in those 2 years. I remeber reading somewhere that Cingular had expanded coverage in my county 156% last year.

It's a lot different here in the NIMBY filled So. California area. It can over 2 years to get a tower approved here!

Correct, no NIMBY's yet. We havent "progressed" that far as of yet.
